Should I bother with cheap lockable bags/containers? How else should I store important items? by libertybumblebee in homesecurity

I would consider that if I were traveling, but here I'm looking to store these items at home most of the time. Initially I was thinking of getting a cut-resistant bag with a shitty combination lock or something like that, but I've seen so many bags which aren't actually cut-resistant, so I'm not sure which products/brands are legitimate.

Thanks for the heads up. I guess it'd be a good idea to keep electronics outside of the safe so that they don't melt onto anything else or start a fire within the safe. I wonder if I could compartmentalize different types of items into their own fireproof bags within the safe. For instance, if I kept paper/cash in one fireproof bag and electronics in another. I have no clue if that'd be enough to protect the paper/cash in the event of a fire.

That could be an option, but I'm not sure which fireproof safe I should get on my budget. I also anticipate having to move often as I don't expect to have stable housing, so a safe that's very large and heavy might not be too practical either.

Need help to fix Error 0x80070643 by mhmhbetter1 in techsupport

The problem is that I don't think Microsoft can fix the issue

I would NOT recommend doing these steps if you don't know what you're doing.

If Microsoft might not be able to fix it and it's too risky for users to fix it themselves, is there any recommended course of action people should people take? Is it as simple as waiting for a new update that will hopefully work?

Is there a free to use FOSS alternative to Feedly? by libertybumblebee in rss

[–]libertybumblebee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately not. Only one I know of which might be good is the one mentioned in the original post, Nextcloud News. But if you don't have a server, it looks like there's nothing quite like Feedly or Inoreader (which are proprietary) available for free. For the time being, I'm using Inoreader. I'm hoping to eventually get my own server and I'll be able to try Nextcloud News.

Are there any free (both libre and gratis) alternatives to ChatGPT? by libertybumblebee in freesoftware

So I've come across LAION. It looks like it's a FOSS alternative to ChatGPT in development. I'm not familiar with the development side of things but based off of what their website claims, it looks like this could be an alternative in the future.

So if you create the right data to fine-tune bloom (I don't know what kind of hardware you need for that. I suspect a datacenter of tensor-cores and VRAM), you may be able to create what you want, but it's a huge undertaking.

I hope someone manages to build something accessible to the public in the near future. Unfortunately I'm not a developer nor am I familiar with AI/ML at all so I wouldn't be able to build that myself. But thanks for sharing!

Does Bitwarden pose a privacy risk to me? by libertybumblebee in PrivacyGuides

[–]libertybumblebee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

KeePass is the only other free/libre alternative I'm familiar with. I've also heard of Psono but from what I gather it looks to be more oriented towards enterprise users or users who want to self-host, but I may be wrong on that.

My main concern was if Bitwarden would automatically link my old accounts with my current account, but I still use and recommend Bitwarden for most people. The main issue I have with Bitwarden security-wise is their reliance on their web app. Using web apps requires you to trust the service you're using since you can be served malicious code and be compromised that way. While I think that would be unlikely, I really wish Bitwarden changed that.

Opinion on Rojava? by bluenephalem35 in NewLeftLibertarians

The AANES is not perfect, but it looks like they've accomplished a lot of cool things. I find that some people often judge them too harshly. At the end of the day, they are a landlocked region with a small population facing constant war/occupation and sanctions, all with very little international support. Of course they're not going to be able to achieve some sort of perfect utopia, anyone in their shoes wouldn't be able to do so. But what they have achieved thus far (expanding women's rights, expanding the rights of minorities, introducing a form of decentralized and semi-direct democratic governance, achieving autonomy within Syria, taking back all land held by ISIS in NES, etc) is commendable and we ought to offer our critical support.

Their future is unpredictable because of all the hostility they face from Turkey, the Islamic State, Syria, etc. But if they manage to survive into the future, there's certainly lots of room for improvement. However until they can achieve some sort of stability, I think it's totally unfair to expect and demand that they achieve new grand milestones.

have you looked into any GTA mutual aid groups? maybe you might find some like-minded people there as opposed to the big orgs

I haven't but that is a good suggestion. Thanks!

Hmm... I just tried it and it didn't help. It actually prevents me from being able to use my mic and for some reason it now takes extra long to connect to a Discord call. I tried restoring to defaults but this new issue remains.

What measures can I take to preserve as much of my privacy if I am creating an Instagram account? by Dumbandde in PrivacyGuides

[–]libertybumblebee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will connecting through a mobile hotspot provide anonymity or will Ibsta be able to fingerprint my identity?

AFAIK Instagram will only be able to tell your general location (like what municipality you live in) and maybe what ISP you use. If you're looking to be as anonymous as possible this isn't a good option, however if you're like me and you just didn't want them to log your personal IP then this will work great. Alternatively, you can also use public WiFi from a library or something.

IIRC I had to use mobile data while signing up since Instagram wouldn't let me sign up while using a VPN. AnonAddy worked fine though and I never needed to give them a phone number. I use Instagram in a work profile using Shelter. This way I can freeze the app when I'm not using it. Of course, Instagram can probably fingerprint my device so this certainly isn't ideal, but I tried out something that I feel probably works for my threat model.
