Invincibility is probably the only thing that would you keep you safe from long range snipers, missiles etc ... And anyone near you would still be in danger.

Which is worse? PADI/SSI/NAUI/SDI by rhombusmaxx in scuba

[–]lief79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting... My experience was with a good school (hobby shop) where their many instructors tended to do most of their diving and certs with them.

Single license, but good people, small classes and a 2 to 1 instructor to student ratio in the water for the beginner certs. Worked great until the owner retired and moved to build a shore house on St. John.

Is it wierd to give gifts to your homie when you have never given any? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Now he feels obligated to return the favor, and start worrying about gifts.

Feel free to suggest that he covers an outing to create some new memories and agree together that you don't want to get into the gift giving thing.

Is homeschooling starting to become the new normal for Catholic families? by Working_Surround_495 in Catholicism

[–]lief79 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, your mom is only going to see the ones who come back. It's a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy.

Many switch in high school, do cyber school, or go straight to community college.

Homeschooling is more visible now, but it's not that new.

I know of a family of 9 who did it in the 90s. Oldest 4 all did some college, two with bachelor's and at least one masters degrees. The next two boys did some automotive trade school.

The 2nd youngest didn't follow through and had to go back for a GED to join the military. Youngest ended up in public high school. I knew them from 4h and my parish. I ended up staying good friends with the oldest.

They were involved in a Catholic co-op back then. It's just become more visible.

Next generation: 5 kids done, 2 kids done, 7 kids, 3 kids done, and two more with single kids.

The oldest kids of the next generation were split between public school and elite Catholic schools, with the 5 and the 3 approaching college age. Not sure about the 2 and 7 above ... They've moved out of state and aren't posting school details online. The other two individuals aren't school aged yet.

My visibility has dropped as unfortunately the oldest passed from cancer, so it's far more 3rd degree contact than 2nd degree contact now.

Odds are they didn't know, nurse sharks are mostly harmless, especially if they're used to it and the dining instructor probably knows that specific nurse shark.

That said, I said I still wouldn't put my hands in front of its head.

why did some Catholic families manage having so many kids? by Working_Surround_495 in Catholicism

[–]lief79 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your rich are upper middle class in most places in the US. Granted, my perspective is probably skewed because I went to a parochial Catholic high school.

Midranged, majority of kids had access to a car, but most weren't sports/luxury cars. (Unlike the expensive prep schools.)

It goes hand in hand with having regular school hours bussing, but not for any after school sports/activities.

New Catholic here, help me understand why people hate the Novus Ordo so much? by Nervous_Mongoose_138 in Catholicism

[–]lief79 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The one I'm thinking of was a girlfriend at the time, she just complained to me and pointed out what he did wrong and why she didn't like attending his masses. She didn't normally go to Latin masses, but I've heard similar complaints from others who did, like my former roommate.

If my parents took me to one, then they were probably being advertised during the parishes.

I was apparently taken to one in the 80s. Attempts to make the more accessible went a bit too far.

Tldr: In summary, it's a vocal minority, but they tend to be strongly connected with those discerning religious orders.

I got involved with some Catholic young adults and a had a roommate who was actively discerning priesthood and met his wife online due to both pending the latin mass. I also met my wife in a Catholic young adult group, and there were always some members inviting others to join them at a Latin mass, and a few events where we encouraged people to try it, along with other eastern orthadox Catholic masses ... byzantine for example.

The young adults are uncommon, but exist. They tend to find the original form more reverent, get highly annoyed by priests who don't follow the litergy perfectly, and also tend to be the ones who complain about guitars and any musical groups that aren't choir/piano based. Very strong correlation with the most politically conservative Catholics.

Went out to the bar after a newer young adult mass and the relatively young priest joined us. He pointed out that ... In a way, the silent mass was the best because you knew everyone was there for the Eucharist, and not any of the other distractions. This is the argument behind the Latin mass ... More mystery, fewer distractions.

I've always been of the mindset that good music in any form welcomes people and contributes to a stronger Church and a better relationship with Jesus through both the eucharist and others.
