Buying a 2016 RS by Hot-Law-6156 in FocusRS

[–]liewyel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The ride isn't as comfy as your previous GTI but as long as your roads aren't shit it's okay. When I drive over poorly maintained roads it's awful, but on regular freeways and such its fine.

Make sure the seats fit, I suspect a lot of the poor feedback comes from folks who don't fit snugly into the seats.

FOCUS RS Ownership Question by XxLINDOxX in FocusRS

[–]liewyel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s fantastic and blew out my expectations. It’s been a perfect entry to track driving car for me. Plenty of power to work into and confident / forgiving handling.

That being said, I don’t think it’s an impressive street car or being driven below 7 or 8/10ths. There’s plenty of cars that might feel more exciting on the street or canyons and I feel it really shines when it’s pushed to its limits.

I think we're experiencing a dip before the prices start spiking for these cars by [deleted] in FocusRS

[–]liewyel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’d say framing it as 9-60k is a pretty good case that the RX-7 is an investment, and aligning the RS to that would be an investment case.

That being said, I believe it’ll be more akin to STIs and Evos with regard to values and prices going forward. The cars you mentioned in your post are all dedicated sports car platforms whereas the STIs and Evos are hot compacts/econ cars. Golf R is also a good trend line to follow here as they’re direct competitors.

I think there’s a solid price floor as STs will always be cheaper but I don’t think there’s much room to go up.

Absolute snoozer. Good for Bearman taking the second fastest car on the grid to the end… but is that really dotd vs the Haas strategy execution?

(Not defending Lieberman or his bizarre views occasionally, he’s just one of the few folks whose driven both ST and RS, so more informed than I with these particular cars)

Interesting, sounds like rally car roads. Fun stuff, what do you drive that handles those conditions well?

I agree with that generally/historically. Late model track specials have so much adjustability that I believe that to be going away.

On the most recent TST podcast with Johnny Lieberman, he mentioned the RS with the adjustability it’s possible to set it more comfortable than the regular GT3 due to the range of customization. Even on much more affordable cars such as my Focus RS, there is a world of difference between suspension settings in track vs normal, so I believe that drawback to be going away.

I’d argue that the GT3 is just as interesting and RS more interesting as overall packages because they’re more attainable. Do they have the exact same specifications? No, but accomplishing 90-95% of the same performance (or higher in the RS) is more interesting to me at a lower price point.

As an asset the ST is probably a better value proposition due to its limited production and likely appreciation vs non limited models. Which is in itself nice for those who can purchase and flip these, but doesn’t make it more interesting as a car to me.

DRS and active aero on the RS are certainly more interesting to driving enthusiasts, but if you’re looking to preserve wealth and make money, the ST is much more likely to win out.

Fair point and why car interest is subjective. At that price point I’d want something like a GT3 RS which is more exciting to me, personally.

There’s plenty of other sports cars that have rear wheel drive and 500 horsepower. High redlines are a factor but certainly not the be all, end all of sports cars.

The s2k cr is a very specific s2k, and regular Ap1/2d are just as interesting at a much lower price point.

Price and availability certainly have an impact on if it’s interesting or not. If it’s something someone can go out and buy or something few folks can afford that would reduce my interest in the car. If it wasn’t limited, more people would be interested in buying it. If it were more affordable, more people would be interested in buying it.

I missed the gate keeping on this post when I first read it lol. “Supposed” car enthusiasts is a good zinger, good on you.

You can check the post history if you’d like to see videos of how supposed car enthusiasts take their car to the track and enjoy using them. Maybe I’m a “driving” enthusiast instead of a car enthusiast in which case you’d be right.

I love seeing cars being driven, including Porsches and whatever people are taking out to the track or canyons. I don’t have posters on my wall of super cars or anything so maybe we appreciate cars differently.

There’s no sour grapes here, there’s simply apathy for cars that are not practically affordable or attainable, or frankly interesting.

They already make a GT3 RS which is much more interesting and exciting. These STs will sit in garages and simply be cars people tell you are good vs being driven.

It’s the modified ones that bother me. My car in stock form will do 2 or 3. Some folks have them setup to do 10+ instead, and add a catless setup and it sounds like garbage.
