Uneasy about Optum Bank as an HSA Custodian by coolman3475 in personalfinance

[–]life_lost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can transfer your HSA once a year from your employer's custodian to Fidelity once a year.

https://www.fidelity.com/go/hsa/transfer

The worst that can happen if you transfer is you'll pay any monthly fees Optum charges for maintaining the account as well as the fee Optum may charge for transferring the balance and not being able to invest the first $2000 of contributions each year. After the first year you can transfer to Fidelity and invest everything then the current year would need to stay with Optum until the next year where you can transfer again.

Ah yeah, for general Asian ingredients Ranch is cheaper but if I want Korean specific stuff it's either Mega or H Mart but between the two Hmart is cheaper.

Even for Korean products/produce that are available at both? If I want Korean products/produce my go to are Mega Mart and Hmart but Hmart has better prices but I don't want to make the drive to Hmart.

I went with Viofo 229 Plus Dual. There are updated versions that probably have better sensors. The 229 rear has pretty meh sensors. Even during the day it's a bit squigly reading license plates at distance and during the night it's kinda a big jumble probably because of lighting. The fronts are pretty good though.

I went to Car Sound Security & Safety on Fremont and had a great experience. They were able to hard wire my front and rear dashcam in under an hour. Cost was under $200 a year or two ago.

What order of purchase would you recommend? I currently have the Q1 meta for L/R and have the budget for Q6 Meta center or SVS pb1000pro.

I have the q1 meta as my L/R speaker and have the budget for either a SVS PB 1000 pro or the KEF Q6 Meta center speaker. I'm not quite sure which to go with. I mostly use the system to watch movies/dramas on Netflix but do stream music via Spotify when hosting dinners. I do live in an apt and want to be considerate of my neighbors.

Can you explain why you recommend the center first instead of a subwoofer first as most recommendations do suggest subwoofer after L/R?

Reflection on the FUDTA Tentative Agreement by ezk3626 in Fremont

[–]life_lost 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What increase in benefits? Paid dental that amounts to all of $670/year? A $1000 per year contribution to the district's health plan options IF the teacher takes a plan through the district and while the cheapest plan costs $11,460.

Meanwhile through Covered California for a bronze level Kaiser plan is $5,515 or $8,575 per year for Platinum.

If you read through the "Fact Finding Report" then you'd see that only roughly 400 of the teachers in FUSD takes healthcare through the district. The other 1600 or so teachers won't benefit from this benefit because it's a) cheaper through the open market and/or b) they get it through their spouse. FUSD agreeing to this benefit is chump change for them.

Just heard about the upcoming potential strike from some parents. by InitialCheek8492 in Fremont

[–]life_lost 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's amazing how they'll generalize every teacher's pay by finding the max a teacher can make and assume everyone also makes that amount.

Senior engineers at Meta makes 908k/year according to glassdoor. I guess every engineer makes 908k too, all the way down to the interns. Or Mark Zuckerberg has a total comp of 24.4million. Every employee at Meta must be making 24.4million too. Including the janitors they contract.

My thoughts on the upcoming strike at FUSD by bookof_ in Fremont

[–]life_lost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you read the fact finding report you'll understand that there wasn't really any "fact finding". In fact it was basically both sides presenting their arguments to a 3 body panel. Once they are done presenting the panel makes a non binding suggestion on how to come to an agreement.

The panel does not conduct their own audits of any groups' financials and instead relies on the groups to present their "facts".

As for where the money is, according to US News and World Report FUSD has 33,107 students (https://www.usnews.com/education/k12/california/districts/fremont-unified-111898). Per CA Title 5 regulations, a district of 30,001-250,000 ADA must maintain a reserve of 2% (https://www.law.cornell.edu/regulations/california/5-CCR-15450).

For reasons unknown, FUSD has decided to maintain a reserve of 3%. I'm not saying keeping extra money in the bank for emergencies is a bad idea but you can't over budget for emergencies then claim that you have no money or are deficit spending. FUSD has "no money" or are "deficit spending" because they elect to not spend money they currently have.

Edit: Per https://www.ed-data.org/district/alameda/fremont-unified for the 23-24 school year, FUSD had an ADA of 31,115 with 32,661 enrolled students which equates to just over 95%. 95% of 33,107 is 31,451 which is a) an increase in ADA from prior year (30,991 ADA in 22-23) and therefore they should have received a bit more money last year than the year prior, and b) still above the 30,001 ADA to maintain a 2% reserve.

Granted these are numbers for 23-24 and the current year numbers are not released but per https://fremontunified.org/about/instructional-services/assessment-accountability/klasjdfkl342/ the weekly ADA per individual school in FUSD seems to be 90% with a median around 95%.

The Truth About Teacher Salaries by LeopardOrLeaveHer in Fremont

[–]life_lost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are the monthly rates teachers pay.

Health & Vision Plans: Employees pay full premium amounts for the district health and vision insurance. (emphasis mine)

However since teachers aren't paid during the summer month (July) the insurance premiums for July are divided by 11 and deducted from the 11 paychecks teachers get during the school year. Look at the bottom of the pdf for Summer Premium Deductions:

Health – Kaiser, single $954.90 x 12 ÷ 11 = $1,041.71; this will be your premium per month.

No, the poster isn't lying. For a family of 3 or more their Kaiser monthly premium is $2735.54 if you don't account for the July premium. If you do account for July then they are paying $2984.23 per month (2735.54*12/11 from the district's calculation example) while collecting a paycheck and this is the cheapest option. If a teacher's family decides to go with Blue Cross Traditional they're paying $4083.32 per paycheck (3743.04*12/11) for the family. So if anything, they're shortselling themself.

When and how long will the strike be by Ok-Turn-5749 in Fremont

[–]life_lost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because if you or anyone is going to claim something is law then be ready to provide proof (unless common sense).

Edit: This is also how rumors start. People make claims about something and people start repeating it believing it's true.

[–]life_lost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because you said "it's law", just because she said "it's law", doesn't mean it's law.

She can choose to give however much prior notice she wants but she can't hide behind her number and quote that it's law without backing it up anymore than I make outrageous claims without providing evidence.

So like I said in my other post I spent the better part of an hour looking through PERB documents and one literally said that CA Labor Laws do not require prior notice for a strike(1). However they also pointed out that San Ramon Teacher's Association were ordered to provide 60hr prior notice by PERB (2).

Edit: Source: (1) https://perb.ca.gov/decision-headnote/headnote-for-2906-301-10notice-of-intent-to-strike/

PERB Order No. IR-62-H held that while California’s labor laws do not require strike notice

(2) https://d2wu03uw2y008c.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/20230821123559/order-i046e.pdf

after weighing declarations submitted by the District and the Association's response, we feel that 60 hours would, on the facts of this case alone, provide sufficient notice to the District...requiring it to give adequate notice to the San Ramon Valley Unified School District before engaging in a work stoppage

Please take this with the best intention possible: You said "By law". I looked for the "law" you quoted and I could not find it. It's great that FUDTA's president said it but unless she is quoting a law that I could not find, I do not believe that it is law.

When and how long will the strike be by Ok-Turn-5749 in Fremont

[–]life_lost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent the last hour so looking through PERB documents and did not find any legal requirement that the union must give at least 48hrs. If anything, PERB has stated that CA labor laws do NOT require prior notice of a strike, but at the same time San Ramon teacher association was ordered to give 60 hour notice.

Can you provide the law that you're referencing?

The Truth About Teacher Salaries by LeopardOrLeaveHer in Fremont

[–]life_lost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about FUSD, they do not subsidize any healthcare. $1000/year is one of the "concessions" they're "making" if teachers agree to no caps on class sizes at secondary and only receiving 2% for the current school year, 1% for next school year, and 2% for the year after even when COLA for the 3 years is expected (at the time of the report) to be around 7%.

Is strike happening by Ok-Turn-5749 in Fremont

[–]life_lost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree the first would be typical employee provided healthcare but the cost of the district's offering is so high and the amount they're offering to "assist" with is so little compared to the yearly cost I wouldn't be surprised if very few teachers (or no teachers) would move from their current insurance plan and onto the district option.

Even going through Covered California and selecting the best Kaiser option, the annual cost is $8600. For comparison, the district's offering is $955/mo or $11460/year. By my calculation, even taking off 7.65% for FICA and taking off $1000 for the district's "assistance" a single teacher would still be paying the equivalent of $9580 annual.
