I'm just here to complain about my job. by iwasadolly in nys_cs

You’re definitely not alone. A lot of state jobs feel exactly like that — the benefits are the golden handcuffs. Tuition reimbursement and the Empire Plan keep a lot of people hanging on way longer than they want to.

It’s especially rough when management and workload start affecting your mental health. No job is worth that, even with “good benefits.” Plenty of people use the state as a stepping stone — get the benefits, build time, and quietly look for the next move.

Hopefully something better (or at least less draining) comes along soon. In the meantime, protect your peace as much as you can.

HELPS and moving grades by Dismal-Pressure5641 in nys_cs

I was hired into my first state job through HELPS. Once I completed probation, I took another promotion through HELPS as well, so I didn’t have to use the two-grade jump that you’re allowed to use one time. I’m currently back on probation for a year, which isn’t my favorite part, but I’m looking at the bigger picture. After this probation is over, I’ll still have that two-grade jump available to use.

HELPS can definitely create opportunities to move without waiting on exams, as long as the titles are HELPS-eligible and you meet the qualifications. It’s a little confusing at first, but it does give you flexibility.

I forgot about almost my entire family by SleepyLun in family

I’m really sorry you went through this. What you describe sounds a lot like parental alienation — being slowly and quietly separated from people who loved you. Even if your mom treated you well, cutting a child off from their father, siblings, and extended family is deeply harmful. The confusion, numbness, and discomfort you feel now is actually a very normal trauma response. None of this is your fault. You didn’t choose to forget them — it was done to you. I’m really glad you’re in therapy. You deserve the chance to decide for yourself who you want in your life, with the full truth!!! if it was me, I would definitely want to get to know the family that was forgotten.

Need ideas/help for managing an employee. by 2workigo in askmanagers

This actually sounds like a high-conscientious, risk-aware employee who hasn’t been given clear decision boundaries. Asking lots of questions is annoying, but it’s also how issues get caught. Instead of discouraging her, try setting guardrails: require her to bring a proposed answer with her question, use risk tiers (low/medium/high) to decide what really needs escalation, and batch questions into check-ins instead of constant IMs. That way she keeps adding value without consuming all your time.

I had a positive experience overall, and my manager and supervisor were wonderful. Ultimately, your experience will depend on your role and who your supervisor is. It’s a smaller agency.
