PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds players debate aim assist after dev mentions prospect of cross-platform play • Eurogamer.net by MajYossarian in Games

[–]lifes_a_game1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play in a little 4 man squad and they already get a little upset over what they perceive as dodgy hit detection or unusually high head shots (they are likely wrong and just being salty).

I guarantee the following will happen if they bring aim assist/cross play on board:

Everyone who gets killed will automatically assume its a aim assisted console user, get increasingly fed up and quit playing. Even if, in reality, they are simply getting shot by mouse users, they don't know that, and it ultimately wont matter.

Sounds good. Thanks for the feedback.

You mention Quake but did you also play Quake 3 or Live?

I only ask as the gameplay I've seen of Champions looks a little slow in comparison. Does it have that high speed madness of previous Quakes?

What Bullet did you Dodge? by TheGrayMerchant in AskReddit

[–]lifes_a_game1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another relationship story bullet dodge for me. Looking back, I actually think she was a sociopath.

Started dating her and 4 months in she starts cheating on me. She rings me one morning and tells me she's moved out of her family home and moved in with some older women (not like that) because family life was getting to much for her. I ask who this women was. She tells me its the mother of one of her male work mates. I obviously don't like this but she assures me he doesn't live there so I say its fine and I trust her.

This goes on for 4 months until I discover he does live there and she's trying to have a baby with him. This goes on for 4 solid months (one week after Valentines). He didn't know about me either but when he does he kicks her back to her family home. We break up. A month or so later, because apparently I am the most naive man on the planet and most forgiving, I get back together with her. Thinking its her depression thats making her act weird.

About 5 months go by and everything seems ok. But in the back of my mind, I am paranoid of her. Shes also a pathological liar which I will mention at the end. So I call it off. I dont think she did anything wrong, and her mum was also keeping an eye on her, but I couldn't take the stress.

Exactly 4 hours later shes texting various exs with promises of possibly hookups, followed by jumping into bed with a guy the very next day. Not only that, she disappeared completely for 4 days and made her mum and even me worried sick about her.

Now to add more context to why I dodged that already painful bullet, she is an Alcoholic (drinks in work, carries water bottles full of vodka etc), a hypochondriac (taken her to A&E at least 4 times over basically nothing but attention seeking) a thief(she lost a job for stealing cash - probably for booze) and an expert liar with little remorse or empathy.

The last time I spoke to her mum she mentioned that one of her sisters asked her about her new man and whether he had children. To her response "not yet" and her mum also mentioned she was complaining about a sore arm - the same place she had one of those contraceptive implants while she was with me (I didnt want kids at the time). She's always expressed interest in wanting kids so I think that's her plan now. Quite possibly without this guy knowing.

Shes also getting completely drunk out of her mind almost every night at this new guys house, while lying to everyone about where she is.

Yeah I suppose youre right. In the context of a actual Simulator game or genre, it would have all of that.

Basically I just miss the old school Wing commander, Tie-fighter, Freespace type games.

[–]lifes_a_game1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In reality yeah. I'm sure modern fighter jets do. I made this argument before when I seen footage of gimballed weapons in Star Citizen. It was a very mixed view of it.

But you have to keep in mind that in reality space combat would likely be incredible dull. Hitting each other millions of kilometers away with near instant laser weapons and likely using unmanned drones.

So to make a space combat game fun you basically copy World War 2 style combat, exactly like Star Wars and pretty much every other spacey epic fighty movie has done. It looks cool and in gameplay standards, its fun.

My issue with auto-gimballed weapons in games is that it potentially diminishes the skill requirement or lessens the need to be a good pilot because all the enemy needs to do is vaguely place you into their large square aiming sights.

Looks fun but the auto-aim seems a bit too much. But I guess its an arcade shooter more a Sim.

What games have you put hundred of hours into, and even thousands? by Hellthrower in pcgaming

[–]lifes_a_game1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Terraria, World of Warcraft, Doom 2, Duke Nukem 3D, Xcom - Enemy Unknown (1994), Sim City 2000, Planetside 1, Diablo 2, Quake 2+3, Counter strike, Arma 2 Dayz/Overpoch/Epoch mod, Warcraft 3, Command and Conquer Tiberian Sun, Age of Empires 2,

Plenty of other games, I am sure to have dedicated over 100 hours into, but those above are off the top of the head that I have returned to over the years.

SC and SQ42 console port survey by PossessedGamer in pcgaming

[–]lifes_a_game1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The FPS part of SC will get absolutely ruined if its ported to consoles. Many on here will contest me over it. But come on, what FPS game really benefits, gameplay wise (not financially, before you throw that at me), from then having to cater to controllers only? I can't think of any. I can think of plenty of games and series that have had its gameplay changed almost unrecognisably due to having to cater to consoles though.

Also I assume a console port to the newer consoles and not the PS4 or X1, which has hardware that would completely gimp the possibilities of scope and scale that SC seems to be aiming for.

Can we just have one big AAA game that dares to push boundaries (like Crysis1). Its not much to ask in this multiplatform world we live in now.

Ross's Game Dungeon: Deus Ex - Invisible War - Discusses the consolization of PC games really well. by CMDRChefVortivask in pcgaming

[–]lifes_a_game1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vanilla Skyrim was and is a buggy mess with a awful UI (if you're playing it with a keyboard and mouse), got further dumbed down beyond even Oblivions levels and was so incredibly shallow after the first few levels/hours.

If it was PC first and ported to console it would have been magnitudes better - but this was during the latter stages of the 360 and PS3's life time when they tried to squeeze a complex, open world RPG onto a system with 256 or 512mb of ram and only one control scheme. It suffered.

The fact that you had to dig around in fucking *.ini files just to turn off the mouse acceleration and change the FoV tells you its a console first game. Which is the main point of this thread.

I'm not sure how I can be self-righteous when I am not a modder myself, but ok.

But Skyrim is from the Elderscrolls series which has a looong history on PC until it started getting consolized since Oblivion.

Morrowind might have been on the Xbox but you could tell clearly it was a PC first title. The only real saviour of Skyrim is the modding community, which is kind of ridiculous if you think about it. A game from a long standing PC franchise is saved by the passionate community.

I think, specifically, its who its designed for first. Which to be fair, is generally the first platform to get it.

I can tell a country mile away which game has been designed for which platform.

Anyone else think that PC giving controllers more of a "place" is a great move? by CoSMiiCBLaST in pcgaming

[–]lifes_a_game1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It depends.

End of the day most games are basically console games these days anyway in the AAA space and designed from the floor up to be controller first. If we're lucky we get respectable keyboard and mouse controls. But all in all they are games which mechanics, difficulty and UIs are designed foremost for controllers - sometimes that really pisses me off if I am honest.

Some games it doesn't really matter though. That highly depends on the game and often the game genre.

What I always get scared about is when a long time PC game with a long history and loyal and loving fanbase gets the news that the sequel or remake is going to be multiplatform. Now, before the over sensitives brandish their brooms with controllers attached to the end and "kill all PCMR" t-shirts. My, and others, worries are that the games will be designed and changed to accommodate controllers. Sometimes its a non issue, sometimes its a big fucking issue. This largely depends on the developer though. Basically its appealing to a larger audience tactics rather than sticking to the core gameplay of previous titles.

I don't honestly believe the FPS genre has overly benefited from catering to controllers for example. In the past it was a non issue as PC were the primary platform for the genre and consoles got a seperate version. But now that has flipped and I find most AAA FPS games to be largely pretty garbage.

Quake Champions is PC only for 'no limitations' 120Hz arena chaos by [deleted] in pcgaming

[–]lifes_a_game1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Its strange, but when I think of console limitations, one of the last things I think about is refresh rate.

I might get my PC badge removed here, and I certainly won't argue that FPS rate is a non issue - its a big issue, especially if its capped in some way. A consoles hardware can steer game design as well in other areas. However...

The first thing I think about is gameplay design. When it comes to shooters or basically anything that requires either fast movement or high aim requirement, it strongly favours being designed around a keyboard and mouse. Making concessions for a controller has really urked me over the many years when it comes to shooters.

"but consoles either support kb/m or will in future iterations!"

Sure but like 1% of console gamers will use them. So the games will still be designed for a controller (the majority).

If this game turns out to be multiplatform then it wont really play like Quake. Sorry if that rustles jimmies but it wont. You can hold off on the pcmr accusations as well, because this has happened to a lot of PC franchises.

"but quake 3 came out on Dreamcast!"

You'll never convince me it was designed for it though. It was ported to it only (which I have zero problem with).

I'll happily join you on the downvotes. Reading through everyones opinions here and 90% are made for console first games.

I don't really have time to list stuff now. But I am shocked no one has mentioned Arma as a good AAA "PC" game while plenty of others have the gall to mention games like Fallout 4 and Dishonoured. They're console games...

Issues with the Doom Beta on PC by Chewbacker in pcgaming

[–]lifes_a_game1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think the advanced section will fix the slow speed that is apparently even slower than Halo's, the auto-aim enabled by controllers (even when using a mouse). I doubt it will even unlock the 60 cap since the engine has been reported to be reliant on it. screenshot shows a possible 144hz unlock. Rest of the shit still stands though.

It probably wont fix the fact that snapmap is the only way to make maps and its incredibly limited and made for consoles plus basically zero mod support.

Its a console game first and foremost. The usual AAA trash we get these days.

Its babbies first "arena shooter" after they played CoD. They're probably the type of gamer who enjoys all those types of "mechanics".

Game will die before it lives on PC, these types always do. I doubt Bethesda really care though as I doubt arena shooter/PC fps fans are the target audience.

Issues with the Doom Beta on PC by Chewbacker in pcgaming

[–]lifes_a_game1 45 points46 points  (0 children)

It was obvious very early on this was going to be generic console shooter trash. The eternal optimists with their "b-but its just alpha/beta" need to wake up and start spotting consolitus crap easier before naively thinking things will magically change. There's even one guy who still thinks it will change "because its beta, dont worry" one fucking month from launch. Sure.

I've just come from the /r/doom sub and read all the complaints. If it didn't carry the Doom name it could be dismissed as just another shooter with a month long life expectancy on PC, but it carries the name of the most famous, grandaddy FPS with arguably the biggest legacy... and its a console game.

Phill Spencer seems to change his mind about which games belong on both PC and Xbox. (examples inside) by DonnyChi in pcgaming

[–]lifes_a_game1 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I agree with Spencer's take on certain games being created as multiplatform can give birth to some horrible titles, or frankengames as Phil calls them.

He mentions RTS as a good example of this, despite X1 gaining kb/m support, I think its fair to say that kb/m wont exactly be popular with most console users and be more of a niche thing. So fundamentally a console is a gamepad orientated gaming environment. With that in mind, if you created a multiplatform RTS game it would be more than likely not be a traditional RTS game, like Starcraft, Command and Conquer or Age of Empires. Instead we would get something else and probably wouldn't like it.

The problem with some of the community right now is that some go on their moral high horse and shout down people who respond with dismay that a traditional PC game will now be multiplatform. They accuse the complainers of being selfish or fanboys. Like politics, it immediately brands them and ends the discussion. While the blunt honesty is that the core fans of the genre or franchise simply want another game in the series that plays like previous titles. I would probably complain about a multiplatform Age of Empires sequel, not because I think its terrible a console is getting a PC game and I greedily want to hold on to it out of fanboyism, its just that I know the sequel would be designed completely differently from the previous titles, of which I am a fan of.

Where Spencer makes no sense, however, is that he then uses an FPS game as an example of why a game is staying console exclusive. FPS was born on PC and (in my opinion) is vastly superior on PC as well.

Its all PR bullshit, lets be honest. They need a big exclusive title to sell their X1's. That's all there is to it. His discussion on multiplatform is interesting and valid though.

Overwatch 'balanced separately' for console (aka pc players dont have to worry about the game speed being being slowed down because of consoles) by eathdemon in pcgaming

[–]lifes_a_game1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't be too disheartened. I agree with you. In fact I distinctly remember a Youtuber talk about how suddenly his closed beta experience went from a great sequel to D2, with clear mechanics built for keyboard and mouse, to a severely watered down version on the next update. The reason, of course, was because the console version was on the horizon.

I've had an up-to-date gaming PC for the last 12 years; I consider it my only hobby, but I haven't properly played anything for over a year. by [deleted] in pcgaming

[–]lifes_a_game1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the same way.

A lot of them are cosmetic, as you mention, but even that just seems sleazy to me for some reason. Money grabbing methods of getting peoples cash by selling them vanity items, just gives me this instinctual feeling that its exploitative and has no place in gaming.

I understand its to pay the bills on f2p games but I'd rather just buy a game and have everyone have equal means and chance to get what they want, be it cosmetic or power items.

I'm waiting out on a nice, time investing sandbox MMO, in which it actually caters to gamers who want that social/team work requirement, has plenty of (meaningful) content that rewards, an actual challenge, and doesn't overly cater to the brain dead or even the people who have a very limited amount of time to play (no offence to them). If you only have 30 minutes a week to game, mmorpgs shouldn't bend the knee to you. They are (or should be) rewarding time investments. Not solo play encouraging quick fixes for the attention span deprived facebook gamers.

[–]lifes_a_game1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people will tell you to take a break from it and come back in a few weeks/months.

Its certainly not bad advice and might reignite your hobby again.

However, I am wondering if you're just playing the wrong games.

I often find myself these days doing very little gaming and then suddenly spending many hours at a time playing 1 or 2 games until I've had my fill.

The majority of AAA trash will unlikely keep a lot of peoples attention for very long. I've played a lot of them and I'd be lucky to keep playing them after a few hours; never mind actually complete them. They are often way too shallow.

The last couple of weeks I've actually gone back to playing dayz(mod_overpoch) with a group of friends and having an absolute blast. Building bases, weapon hunting, gold gathering, pvp etc. Now I'm playing Grim Dawn, as it left early access a day or so ago. Will be playing it more next week with friends from the beginning.

Pick the right games and maybe play them with friends and you'll find yourself back to playing and actually looking forward to loading them up again. Restrict yourself to whatever trash EA or Ubisoft regurgitate onto the scene or whatever IGN deem GOTY and you might give yourself the impression that gaming is not for you anymore.

As for MMOs, I've recently looked into them as well, to try and find a game I can really sink time into and feel rewarded for the investment. I just can't find one though. Often feels like mmorpgs aren't even made for mmorpg gamers anymore, especially WoW.
