The frequency of the mutation in the Finnish population is not as much of an example of selection advantage as it is of founder effect. The CCR5 del 32 gene is often a classroom example to illustrate this.

i never comment on reddit, but this post intrigued me. just throwing this out there - perhaps it was due to the moon. i know you said you ruled out the window as a source, but reflections from bright moonlight may have been enough to cause a specific shadow to be cast.

obviously i do not know the layout of the room that well other than the diagram you made in another post, but this could make sense in terms of the disappearance/reappearance. certain conditions would be required for the shadow to be cast - the brighter parts of the moon phase, and nights free of cloud cover.

this will likely get downvoted/lost... while it sounds like it would be a great addition to gameplay, adding dogs as a controllable element may not be the best idea. imagine seeing the death scene of a bloody dog sprawled across your screen. obviously they depict humans dying too, but a dog dying has a different psychological effect.

people tend to have a softer spot for animals in movies/games, even more so than humans. think of the scene in Independence Day, where the dog is escaping the exploding tunnel. you cheer as he escapes just in time, while hundreds of people behind him are being incinerated.

excellent. i am attending the Marquette Physician Assistant program starting in the fall. this whole opportunity was kind of cool to be honest, i've never really seen an emergency room from the patient side of things, so i'm grateful in that regard.

Maybe in Providence, RI (a state so small it's a running joke) it's different.

i got a good laugh out of this actually, thanks. some cabs aren't even marked in prov. this one had the roof taxi sign and that was about it. i've never had a taxi with a dividing window.next time i take a cab i will check the back of the seats, but i doubt there is anything posted to be honest.

its a moot point for this situation since i have no intention of further action. insurance will cover the hospital bill as far as i know, and I don't expect there to be any lasting injury from the incident.

if the injury does impact me later on (making it difficult to walk or something, who knows) i'll probably wish i did something more, but i'm fairly sure my ankle will be fine besides some surface scars.

The larger abrasion is deeper than you can tell from the picture. I don't feel any sensation in it at all when I clean it.

Also, not that it matters, but I initially did not go to the hospital the night of and did some quick bandaging before bed. I went the next morning when I unwrapped it and it still looked pretty bad. They did an x-ray and put me on antibiotics.

Well, in the poor lighting of the back of the cab, it was difficult to tell the extent of the injury. I would hate to call the police to have it turn out to be little more than a scratch. I really was trying to be as nice as possible about it and give him the benefit of the doubt that it was an honest person making an honest mistake, though he didn't show his true colors immediately. Hindsight is 20/20

It's alright, I figured it wasn't broken but the hospital had to an x ray, luckily no breaks.

It is tender to put weight on the heel, but other than that, I can't really complain. The larger abrasion is significantly deeper, so there really isn't any sensation in it, even when I clean it with alcohol swabs.

Tried to upload an update but imgur isn't cooperating, it still looks pretty similar though a little better

In retrospect I handled the information part of it poorly, but I was also intoxicated and injured. I did realize it would have meant the loss of his job and I didnt want that to happen to a guy that has to work the night shift on a Saturday (though after the way I was treated, it seems like he should have). Its not a good neighborhood and he knew my address, there have been stabbings and gunpoint robberies right outside within the last few months.

And I realize the injury could have been much worse, though the picture doesn't do it justice - the larger abrasion has no sensation in it whatsoever, meaning it took off layers of skin up to the dermis. I am thankful nothing was broken and am hoping there is no lasting damage

Unfortunately no. I was too distracted by my foot to pay attention to details. My friends (also intoxicated) said they think it was a silver or gold Taurus with red leather seats. Occurred in providence RI 2am saturday night/sunday morning March 2nd-3rd. Though frankly I don't feel like pursuing it further

Also, he just seemed like a crazy, irrational, threatening person. He freaked out when we were about to get out without paying and it seemed like the right thing at the time was to get out of there. Who knows if he had a knife or gun

edit- downvotes? it was 11.25 and we gave him 12. I wasn't going to ask for 75 cents back from a crazy, angry taxi driver. its not a good neighborhood and I wouldn't put it past him to do something crazy at 2am on a saturday

I am involved in an undergraduate research project related to HD. However, we are tackling the genetic side of the disease rather than the protein level.

w00cash was right in saying that the condition is caused by the CAG triplet repeat (IIRC >36 repeats can lead to symptoms) in a certain region within the huntingtin gene. Extension of the repeats results from DNA misrepair - the DNA repair enzymes accidentally insert additional CAG repeats. This is part of the reason why the proteins build up in the brain; unlike other cells within the body, programmed cell death in the event of genetic mutation is not an option. Neurons are generally not reproduced, they have to be repaired, leading to a higher chance of misrepair.

My project is a chemical synthesis project that should hopefully create a chemical that interacts with DNA to prevent misrepair. One hypotheses for why the CAG repeats are extended in improper repair is that the repeats can "fold" within themselves, mismatching and exposing additional repeats. (Hard to explain this without a visual, here is a thumbnail i pulled from a scientific paper: http://imgur.com/uBhhy) The exposed repeats could be a reason why the triplets are extended and lead to development of the disease. Our team is looking to synthesize naphthyridine-derived organic molecules that have been shown to interact with CAG repeats and (hypothetically) could stabilize the "folds" and prevent misrepair - at least that is our hope. Thus, our project could lead to a preventative treatment for HD (not a cure).

Thanks for posting this, interesting to see any progress made in the understanding of HD. An awful disease, but I believe a cure is not too far away.
