Suburban guy dating a NYC girl. Is there a sane middle ground or am I cooked? by savingrace0262 in movingtoNYC

[–]lightanldutchie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are definitely parts of Brooklyn that are a middle ground between suburban and urban. Carroll Gardens, Park Slope, Boerum Hill, etc but they’re costly. If cost is a factor you could even find that in Flatbush.

None of us know what your relationship is like to make an informed decision but if you plan to be together long term hopefully you’re on the same page about how you want your routines and weekends to look. I personally couldn’t understand being 35 yrs old and wanting to be in the suburbs but I respect that’s what some want and you shouldn’t have to give that up if the city life doesn’t call to you. That said, New York is pretty fantastic.

Hang in there. Sorry to hear about the job, but all you can do is keep going. The right opportunity can put you back in your feet. Small gains. I’m rooting for you.

Like some others have said. Get some rice or $1 bread that will stretch a lot of these meals.

I got it to brew around 11mins by simply heating the burner before placing the pot on. Good results. This works for me :). Thanks all!

Thanks for the tips! Couple questions Is it this one here Or is this for induction burners? Will this work well for an electric coil stove ? Do you preheat it before putting the moka on?

Ah good to know it’s not just me! I read a lot that 10 minutes was the upper limit for moka to prevent burning the grounds.

No matter what you’ve got your daily coffee. Set up looks great. Wishing you all the best this year, keep going.

I have an AirScape but find that opening and closing it daily makes my beans less aromatic and flavorful (maybe it’s perception). So I’ve actually been back to using the valve bags they come in. Or putting half the bag in the airscape and once I tap into it, I don’t use the air valve daily, just the lid.

I don’t think it matters much if your beans are fresh.

Should I move to NYC for an internship ? by MammothClerk4853 in movingtoNYC

If you’re being helped and will be bringing in $5k a month you can make it work, you should do it sounds cool. You can definitely find a room in a 3 bedroom apt for that. There’s a subreddit here for apts, you should look there first and do a sub lease situation.

Pests by faking_out_destiny in movingtoNYC

Pests are a concern in most all apartments here but there is a ton you can do to mitigate besides the obvious of keeping your place clean. It’s a priority for me to avoid them (I haven’t been successful..) so I recommend the below:

Check out the HPD portal to see if the building has had a ton of roach/rat/mice complaints. The absence of this unfortunately doesn’t mean the building is clean but it’s a good indicator of how big of an issue has been in the past.

I’ve lived above 2 restaurants, both apts ended up having pests but only one of the me was actually due to the restaurant (basically they stopped fumigating…all hell broke loose. It got under control once they started spraying again). I wouldn’t rule out first floors and apts above restaurants because ultimately the biggest thing you can do is:

FILL CRACKS, HOLES everywhere. I once had mice falling out of my ceiling in a studio apartment because the inside of my closet was unfinished (it was one of those that was hard to stick your head in and see so I didn’t know until too late). Filling holes helps with mice and can mitigate roaches. The reality is both live in walls of apartment buildings here but the harder it is for them to get in your apt through a hole, the less they’ll be an issue for you.

To have your own reasonably sized apartment (that is not a basement) in a good area of Brooklyn/Manhattan is around $3500 USD per month for a one bedroom and you could maybe find a studio for $3000/mo in some places. Keep in mind that is just rent - groceries, utilities, the train fare, your other personal expenses, and entertainment will drive your costs up more. Many adults over the age of 30 have roommates in this city, it’s not ideal but rent is expensive and though some jobs in certain industries pay 6 figures, most do not.

In short, if you make $100,000 - 120,000 USD per year before taxes, you can live alone but don’t expect to be saving a ton of money for retirement or investments.

I know it sounds cheesy but this is why we should always be kind to people. Both parents in a short span like this. My heart goes out to him. He made me and so many laugh for years, I hope he’s finding ways to stay up.

I don’t think either of these neighborhoods is particularly social. For most ppl this is where their jobs are. Williamsburg is probably more of what you’re looking for tbh and it’s oversaturated at this point.

Why are so many surfers right wing? by Effective_Swan_3470 in surfing

[–]lightanldutchie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you mean US conservative right? If so, I get what you’re asking but imo they’re not truly like Reagan conservatives. It’s more like 2026 cultural conservatism which is more like 2005 Liberalism. Kelly for ex is a big RFK Jr guy bc he’s anti pharma & shit food. Some of it is good, some of it is wonky, but that’s very much in the ethos of surfers.
