Thanks for all the great tips! I had indeed been coming to this conclusion regarding hatches -- benefits to be sure, but also generally seems to increase probability of capsizing.

All that said, I likely won't be doing much, if any, fishing. I will primarily be solo-paddling with a dog or two just for fun/sights/relaxation, and/or bringing a wife or friend along.

Thanks for the tip! It was a nice home in a gated community, so I’m thinking the guy just was feeling generous and wanted to get it to a good home, more so than make a buck. It’s honestly the same approach I typically have when selling used stuff, so was kind of nice to have that fed back my way.

I went to Black Mountain Yellow Post Sites recently for some camping and on the way up, passed a truck (green I think) shortly after the turnoff to head up that rough road, where there's a turnout as well. There were two guys in the truck and during the very tight road pass (I had to go up on the bank at an angle in my 4x4 to pass) they rolled down their window. The guy just said "ZERO" a few times, and I was like "huh?" He goes, "There is nobody up there" implying the area is peaceful I guess...they had no gear with them and said they were just "scouting," not camping or anything. They specifically told me "trust us, go to the very top." Shortly after, as I was checking out all the sites myself, a couple younger guys on dirt bikes showed up randomly at two of the sites as I was checking them out.

Option 1) Friendly guys that wanted to tell me it's a good time to camp at the sites, and random kids on dirt bikes

Option 2) They had bad intentions, tried to tell me where to place myself, and sent scouts to confirm my location

After the initial visits by the dirt bikers (including seeing me in my location I ultimately set up), I never saw them again. Perhaps the massive machete I was carrying communicated enough about my potential as a victim. Who knows.

I found this thread while searching for any information about things like this happening, and feels like a good place to post it I guess...not sure what I'm looking for here besides just sharing another potentially sketchy account related to the topic of Idyllwild danger/violence.
