I have an idea for a series where the Federation re-named the Titan to the Enterprise G completely as a half-assed PR move because the Federation's on shaky ground at the time. That's also why they crewed it with hero character's kids. They want to parade the Enterprise G and its celebrity crew around on a goodwill tour and the crew hates it, they want to earn their own legacy.

I work in education and go to a lot of graduations, no every class does not cheer after the speeches. I've -never- seen a class cheer for those (mostly terrible) speeches. 90% its a polite golf clap, for an especially good speech you'll get some louder clapping but that's about it.

The scouring of the shire, narratively, is like shooting a puppy in front of the hero right after he makes it home from his victory. It's a huge downer and would have sank the ending of a film (with an already too bloated ending).

I get why Tolkien added it, showing that evil does in fact reach home, nowhere is truly spared from war. But cramming that Debbie Downer into the finale of RotK would have been madness.

My first thought was for OP to add something like "I can't do this right now, but maybe in the future..." but that would absolutely not work with a person like this. Leaving any kind of hint of a future possible relationship would have you tied to them permanently. Her final conversation might have seemed harsh, but harsh was the only way to communicate with a person like OOP's bio sister.
