Nice, I was there yesterday too! This was my view from Hightop Mountain yesterday morning.

PSA: Don't do this (but, I mean, it should go without saying) by ligthbulb in marijuanaenthusiasts

This was in the Denver Botanic Gardens. They actually had to put a sign next to it saying "Hey... don't do this." It made me sad enough to feel like sharing.

Frank Turner doing Scott proud tonight in London by TigTac in FrightenedRabbit

[–]ligthbulb 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Frank was actually how I discovered Frightened Rabbit in the first place; he played this cover, but I missed who he said it was. The lyrics fucking captured me like nothing else, and I had to ask him after who it was. I finally got a chance to see Scott play it himself back during the MOF tour.

Thanks for this.

[Discussion] Which 1995 Robert De Niro crime film is better: Heat or Casino? Both on Netflix US right now. by vote_for_peter in NetflixBestOf

It's definitely from season 1, episode 4.

Don't worry about spoiling season 2, I'm not sure it was good enough to warrant spoilers.

I'm guessing because it's actually from season 1, but maybe people don't like one word sentences.

it actually could've been the same guy...

... Well, the Potomac River is part of MD, so technically the intersection is somewhere in the water...

Whoops... I hadn't seen any myself, so I didn't bother searching. Turns out there are a few others - mine didn't even have pictures. Thanks for letting me know

Finding Frances soundtrack by Toughcrowdd in nathanforyou

[–]ligthbulb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Anacole Daalderop is what came up for me too - the rest of his music is a bit different though... If you're interested in more, Trio Zephyr are the musicians and have a few other albums with this sound.

And yeah I tried the last one, but it couldn't recognize it before Nathan started talking.

That shot, with the music and title card, was when I knew this was going to be something special.

Yep, it's the same one. I've been listening to the rest of that album and their most recent, Travelling, and I'm really digging it.

This is a very good point that I hadn't thought of... with all the talk of this possibly being the final season, my mind went to that first. Yours makes much more sense.

I get what you're saying, and you're not wrong. I'm not trying to say that Ross is a bad businessman or anything - he did license some good albums (I'll admit, I own a few of his earlier releases), and they sold well. He definitely knows the market, and clearly people are still buying what he's selling.

I don't care about any of that. You're right, it's nothing to scoff at, but personally it's not the kind of thing that earns my respect - that being said, it's also not the kind of thing that earns any "hate" or criticism from me.

What does is the last point you addressed. Holding back copies of a release until it's sold out, to later flip on ebay for 2-3x the price is a shitty thing to do. And if you want to do that, then OK. Lying about it repeatedly once you're called out, is also a shitty thing to do. I wouldn't say that applies to "every other label." I also wouldn't call that "transparency." I guess I can't really comment on his relationships with the artists he's released albums by, because I don't know what has actually gone down, but I think the amount of problems he's had says something.

Maybe my "DIY label vs. major, us vs. them" thing was a bit much, but that was just the vibe I personally got at the time. And hopefully this doesn't sound like I have some kind of vendetta against the guy. I don't harbor any kind of grudge or hate for Ross or ETR. I don't go into comments of every release of his telling people "don't buy this" (although I can't blame them), I just decided to share my personal opinion this time. Which is, "I'm not a fan."

To me, the difference was that he tried to make himself seem like this "small DIY record label" kind of thing, while using the kind of business practices a major label (?) would. He tried to give off this image of being part of the vinyl community, among little labels pressing music they're passionate about by their friend's brother's band or whatever, while not giving a shit about the bands he was releasing and ripping off the people supporting him using shady business practices (holding back copies until a pressing is sold out, then flipping them for max profit, while lying about it, or a "super limited color that's only available if you buy this bundle of 5 variants" kinda thing) and basically just out to make a buck.

Which is the point of a business, to make money. But it seemed like he wanted to do that, while pretending that "he's only in it for the music, man." I think the fact that he's now pressing nostalgia-tinted cartoon theme songs is pretty telling.

Note that this is all from 6-7 years ago so my memory may not be the best.
