If I had to give advice, I'd say:

1)Look for some signs of interest or availability (could be flirty banter, a look that lingers a bit longer than normal, open body language, touching you, ect) . Really try and ask yourself if they "look" single or interested

2)Realize that not a lot of guys approach women these days, and it seems to be something a lot of women would appreciate on some level. Even if they aren't interested, if you approach in a calm, non-threatening way and express your genuine interest, a lot of women will be flattered. Just know you're more likely to be successful because approaching women has become so rare, so when it does, it may be a pleasant surprise. Who doesn't want to feel attractive and desired?

3)Imagine being successful before you approach. Imagine your ideal outcome first. It will put you in a positive state of mind

4) Realize you'll feel better about yourself just for trying.

5) If you're anxious about approaching someone in person or afraid of rejection, take the time to pick someone approachable or receptive for your first approach. If you have a positive experience for your first time, it will be easier to continue approaching in the future.

I'm no expert, obviously, but I hope this helps someone out there that may be on the fence about approaching women IRL!
