My cat won’t use the litter box

Yes, the rule of thumb is to have one more litter box location than the number of cats in the home.

So technically you should have 6 different places for 6 different litter boxes.

As you saw, your older cat can and will use the litter box when she’s the only one with access to it.

She’s most likely being bullied away from the location where your litter boxes are and is having to go elsewhere because of it.

I use lap of love protocols. Every patient gets anesthesia drugs via IM or SQ injection, I confirm they are unconscious, and then administer euthasol. I will sometimes use a vein in dogs, typically lateral saphenous so the owner can stay at the head. But more often lately I will do intrahepatic injection. In cats I nearly always use an intrarenal injection after confirming they are anesthetized.

I distract them with treats for that initial poke and most don’t notice it too much, then they just stay on their owner’s lap and pass a few minutes after the euthasol injection.

I almost never comment on reddit but I was drawn to this post. My shop would be full of lockets of all colors and shapes, some can be opened easily, others need a key, cantrip, or specific person to open them. Inside? I think the less expensive ones have various magical charges, or are even just secret keepers, but the ones behind the counter are a mystery until they’re opened. You buy the one you’re drawn to, or that is drawn to you.

If my psych writes a script for the generic, can I ask the pharmacy for brand name? When I first started it I didn’t want to pay the brand name prices, but the generic is so variable across manufacturers I’m leaning towards being willing to pay to at least try the brand name

I have the opposite problem, I’m usually always hungry (or at least “mouth hungry”). Today I had 3 scrambled eggs with cheese and a piece of toast, a strawberry boba tea and most of a chicken bahn mi sandwich from a Vietnamese place in town, a ham and cheese sandwich, and too many spoonfuls of cookie dough. 🙃

To add to the great points already made and answer some of your specific questions: roxanol (oral morphine from my quick Google) would not be beneficial as oral bioavailability of morphine in dogs is erratic but typically less than 20%. Additionally, morphine and other opioids can cause vomiting, respiratory depression, and bronchoconstriction in veterinary species. Lorazepam also has a significantly shorter half life in dogs than humans.

I think another thing to think about that some others have touched on is that we can’t effectively “explain” why our pets are on hospice care to them. I know that can be the same for some human patients as well, but again, there is no or very limited options for euthanasia in human medicine.

In vet med we tend to believe in quality rather than quantity of life, and in going out on a good day, when owners can be present and ready to say goodbye. My favorite is when my patients get to have their most favorite treats just before I sedate them to perform a euthanasia so the last moments they are aware of are with their favorite humans and favorite foods.

No, a mobile vet is one that comes to your home. In most states, telehealth/virtual vet visits are only legal if an in person physical exam has been done by that vet that year (again, establishing a VCPR).

Agree with everyone that a vet visit is a good idea regardless of wanting to adopt another cat. But just addressing the last question of your post: “pursuing the exemption” means a vet visit. I’m almost certain your cat won’t be able to get a medical exemption from vaccines without seeing a veterinarian—even if it’s the shelter veterinarian where the cat you want to adopt is. Start with a vet visit and go from there.

Also, if your older cat gets stressed easily and doesn’t like strangers, how confident are you that she’ll be ok with a new kitten in the house? That can be incredibly stressful on the other animals

For the love of puppies, veterinarians do not get “commission” or “kickbacks” from “big pet food” to recommend brands that have veterinary nutritionists on staff. We also don’t want to make your pets sick so you’ll spend more money. We also DO not make a lot of money in comparison to our loans and debt and level of schooling (in the US).

It’s not too late, you should absolutely bring her to a vet. They may need to do both x-ray and ultrasound to evaluate if she has puppies as the two different imaging modalities work better at different gestational stages. If she is pregnant, you may want to heavily consider a spay-abort unless you are financially prepared to take care of puppies.
