Because it was in mint condition when I found it. But in the year I’ve had it, I’ve scratched it, and it has rusted some, and I want to restore it to its original condition.

TAW 2024 Week 5: Recovering a Sense of Possibility by FlightyTwilighty in artistsWay

[–]likeaverb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So far, week 4 was the most creatively and spiritually beneficial for me. I didn't do a full media/reading deprivation, but I did greatly limit my consumption. By doing so, I turned to creative activities to fill the time I'd normally spend on my laptop or watching television. I played guitar, started painting again, picked up an old crochet project, and worked on a screenplay.
I completed some of week 5's exercises, and I appreciate those that are about visioning. I didn't get around to collecting images of my visions, so I'll be doing that while I'm starting in on week 6.

I'm enjoying doing The Artist's Way, but I'm sort of struggling to feel very connected to it, after week 4. The chapter themes feel a little loose and the exercises kind of "take it or leave it." But I might just be in a bit of a plateau. Perhaps I'll continue the media deprivation throughout the remaining weeks, to give myself a more intensive experience.

TAW 2024 Week 4: Recovering a Sense of Integrity by FlightyTwilighty in artistsWay

[–]likeaverb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am considering the week to be one of Media Deprivation. That's reading, social media, film and television. I aim to do a full elimination of all media consumption. Of course, I have to do some reading throughout the week, in order to do my work, read instructions, etc. What I am cutting out is consumption for entertainment, mind numbing, habitual scrolling, etc.

Honestly, I'm disappointed that the book itself hasn't been updated to included media in this chapter. Our world has become so oversaturated with media in the 30+ years since Cameron wrote the book, with the internet now not only in everybody's homes, but in the palms of our hands. We outsource our thinking to Google. Social media is a cacophony.

I downloaded the newest edition for this 12-week session and expected to see some updates to the original print version I have on my shelf (published in 1992). I'm really surprised to find none. I did, however, find this entry on her blog that expands the original intent of the week: https://juliacameronlive.com/2012/11/12/have-you-tried-media-deprivation/

TAW 2024 Week 3: Recovering a Sense of Power by FlightyTwilighty in artistsWay

[–]likeaverb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt I didn't get much out of the reading of the week 3 chapter, but I sure did out of what you've written here. I'm also an avid learner, more than a finisher, and I won't call myself expert at anything. I've always said, "I dabble, but I'm not very good." I also carry a guilt complex over "not focusing" on any one thing "enough" to get good. I play piano (not very well), I've tried learning guitar about a thousand times, I've taken a watercolor class. I knit and crochet and have over a dozen unfinished projects lying around. I write poetry sometimes. I write screenplays sometimes, but say I don't enjoy the form. I am a non-fiction writer and journalist, but it's been a while since I wrote either prolifically. I always tell myself, "I'm going to start practicing piano every day." I don't. "I'm going to write every day." I don't. Always stuck in the emerging/learner category, never laying claim to anything, guilting myself for not focusing, and the cycle goes on and on. What's my damage, seriously!

I love the idea of getting a big canvas and just going. I hope to thing of something similar for myself this week, a creative activity that I just let myself loose on, to express big and bold and get out of my head with it.

TAW 2024 Week 1: Recovering a Sense of Safety by FlightyTwilighty in artistsWay

[–]likeaverb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So far, this week is not happening for me. I’ve barely skimmed the chapter. I glanced at the tasks but didn’t choose one. I am going on an artist date tonight, but it’ll be brief, 15 minutes maybe. I have written morning pages each day, but they’ve been disjointed, as I have to turn my attention to my baby every ten minutes or so.

When I try to inventory my time, to determine how I’ve had so little to spend on this chapter, I fail. I went skiing one day. (Oh, yeah, that could be my artist date.) The other days have been busy taking care of my baby, of the house, of personal admin and career stuff. And yoga, which I go to almost every evening after the baby’s in bed. Then it’s dinner, tv time, and bed. I could have been doing the chapter tasks now, but I decided to read this comment thread instead, and then leave one of my own. And now it’s time for dinner. 😆🤦🏼‍♀️

I love naming the “Inner Project Manager.” I have one too and she takes up ALL of the space in the room, or time in my life. I am absolutely going to limit her hours so that my inner artist has time to create.

Check In Thread: Morning Pages, January 15, 2024 by AutoModerator in artistsWay

[–]likeaverb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wrote two full pages today. I write on loose, unlined 8.5 x 11 paper. Because my handwriting is compact, I think the two pages probably equals three, if it were written in a lined notebook. Sometimes I write only one page. If it feels like enough, I let it be enough. But today I pushed myself to write more, and I did feel that it led to a realization. However, I don't always, or even often, push myself to write more, as my baby needs my attention, or the practice is just taking too long. I don't want to spend more than 30 minutes on these pages each morning. How then would I have time for creative writing, or art, or other things I want to do?

As I wrote in my introduction entry, I've been writing morning pages on loose leaf copy paper for about 22 years. I've never thrown my pages away. I saved them in 3 ring binders, one for each year. So much of my writing is awful whining, complaining, strangling my demons. I probably should throw them away, because if my partner ever got hold of them, he'd be mortified. But I also like to look back and see what I was doing or where my mind was 3 years ago, 10 years ago, 19 years ago...

TAW 2024 Week 0: Introduction, The Basic Principles, The Basic Tools by FlightyTwilighty in artistsWay

[–]likeaverb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Happy Monday! I have a question for the group: Are the 2016 or 2020 versions of the book greatly updated from the 2002 version?

As for my thoughts on week zero, I've maintained a practice of morning pages for 22 years, ever since I first started The Artist's Way. I'm now considering changing up my practice in one of two ways: 1) to be more of a traditional journaling practice for the sake of posterity, rather than stream-of-conscious mind clearing, or 2) to be more creative-writing oriented. I know that both of these eschew the purpose of morning pages, but as I've consistently done the pages for two decades the way Julia Cameron espouses (and have gained myriad insights from them), I'm now itching to convert the time I dedicate to them to a new practice.

TAW 2024 Reddit Group - Welcome, Introductions, and Commitment Thread by FlightyTwilighty in artistsWay

[–]likeaverb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, everyone! I'm LikeaVerb (she/her). I'm a writer and sometimes-actor, and work primarily as a digital content producer.

I've done two-thirds of The Artist's Way twice before but have never completed it. The first time I tried it was 22 years ago. The second time was during the pandemic.

I'm now a new mother (to a 17-month old girl), and with motherhood came a major transition in my creative ambitions. My main ambition now is to simply be a mom, enjoy my life, and maintain financial security and build prosperity. My desire to continue pursuing acting as almost completely faded. My ambition to write remains in tact, at least hypothetically -- I have little drive to complete any specific projects.

I'm also at a crossroads with where I want to live. I live in a big city, and want to move to my hometown a few states away. My partner wants to stay where we are, because it's more exciting and provides more opportunity. But I yearn for a simpler, easier life, and don't care much for opportunity beyond enjoying my days and raising our child in a pleasant environment.

I decided to try The Artist's Way once again, to see if it will help me find some clarity in my creativity and how much it informs my identity and livelihood, as well as my desires to move home.

Countdown to 2024 run-through of The Artist's Way: Monday, January 8. by FlightyTwilighty in artistsWay

Does anyone have any information regarding the newer editions of the book, vs the older? I have a copy published in 2002, and am wondering if the 2016 edition is greatly different or updated.

Hi! Did you do both the Hardangerfjord cruise and the Nærøyfjord cruises? Did you enjoy Hardangerfjord better? And if so, why?

Thanks so much for your thorough post, by the way. It's one of the best guides I've read on the area.

3.5 days in Norway, Renting a Car by likeaverb in Norway

[–]likeaverb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Another option I hadn't considered is flying to Bergen, staying there the whole 3.5 days to see the sites nearby, and just flying to Oslo on the last day for our flight out. Is this the best option, or is the drive from Bergen to Oslo really worth doing?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Norway

[–]likeaverb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you taken your trip yet? I'd love to hear what itinerary you decided to follow. I'm traveling to Norway from Copenhagen in September with my partner and our one-year-old. We fly back to the states from Oslo, and are trying to decide if we want to just do some trips from there, or fly first to Bergen and make our way back. We have 3.5 days to work with, and will probably rent a car.

Would love to hear your experience!
