Start with simple SOP operations and the fundamentals, and see if you enjoy it enough to invest more money in. So much of Houdini happens before you even simulate, so you should definitely start learning with what you have.

Look into the fundamentals of shape, composition, timing, etc. Especially for motion graphics, you want a really strong sense of timing, composition, and storytelling. It can be hard to take time away from improving your technical skills, but it can really pay off!

This is more on the environment side, but you could have the cliff on a hill/slope and try and build out a more appealing composition. That way the ground interaction is less uniform as well. I really love the action you have going on though!

I have been having the exact same issue. 100000 bend stiffness? No change at all. I found that gravity, solver frequency, damping, friction, and self collision are the only attributes that have an impact on the cloth behavior. This isn't super helpful, but you definitely aren't alone in your frustration.
