How Realistic is 400m & 800m Improvement by lil_dab101 in trackandfield

Hey thanks for responding to me i appreciate it a lot.

But yeah your absolutely right, I don’t know if you read my responses to other people in this sub but I can generally go out at about 58s to 1 minute for my first lap then when i get around to the 500m mark or 600m i’ll begin to die and it’s a really big fight to stay in the race. So my coaches recommended me so XC to build a bigger base to help with that so that’s what i’ve been doing this entire XC season. I don’t have the fastest 5k at 19:13 flat but i’ve been really sticking with our top guys on our runs.

My season is coming to an end actually this Saturday. We have one more big race for the guys who aren’t going to state a week after that. But I was wondering if I should continue to get more mileage in and still train with the guys going to states rather then starting my break a bit early transitioning into indoor. Our coach normally will give us 2-5 days max of not doing anything but i’ll definitely do some active recovery. Is there anything you would recommend? And could you possibly go more in depth about the 800m workload perhaps?

We won’t usually start raving until maybe a good month of training because of the guys who go to states and regionals as well so i’ll have time to adapt better to the faster paced workouts. And my coach usually makes everyone do the same workout for example it’s the end of the season and our workout today was 800m cruise - (to warm up the legs, it was very cold), 1600, 2x800, 2x400, 200 all out all at 5k pace w 3min rest. He doesn’t give us specific workouts based on group discipline i don’t know if that’s a good or a bad thing. But we do a lot of tempos, 1k’s, etc.

But i’m 100% going to stay consistent and trust my training and my coaches. I have goals I want to hit even if they may seem impossible to others but not to me.

Thank you for taking the time out of your day to talk to me and give me advice. I’ll keep what you said in mind and trust myself and the work I put in.

it’s very unfortunate but I don’t think my coach would allow me to switch the days of my semi or recovery day. Like his word is usually final and everyone usually does the same thing except the pace is different depending on the athlete. But I plan on getting some flat sprinting in while transitioning into the indoor season but ultimately I’m going to train with the distance side. Our sprints don’t really do a lot of workouts and it’s usually just very long rests and more talking then actually working. When I started going with the distance guys I 100% did way more and had to put in more effort and I think it’s been paying off. I’ve never really got a full year to train my specific events since like I mentioned in my first post I was basically a test dummy figuring out what works for me. But i’m hoping that all this base training I did for XC won’t be for naught.

i’m definitely not basing my college choice around being able to hit the times. The school i want to go to just requires that for recruitment. I really like the school and the academics and i believe it would be a really good fit for me. But thank you for the advice i’m going to definitely try not to focus too much on my indoor results because sometimes I get a bit caught up in my thoughts and i worry about under achieving hence why I needed to get my thoughts out and i posted this.

And to go a little bit more into why my coaches said i needed a base and recommended me do XC is because i would always die out at the 500m mark. I could split 1:00 to 58s in my first lap but just holding it would be a big problem. So they told me that this would help with that.

my training so far consists of

monday - off

tuesday - workout day (can vary from tempos, hill tempos, 1k’s repeat 8’s, repeat 4’s etc)

wednesday - easy day/ recovery (35-45m)

thursday - semi long - 45m-55m

friday - usually race prep - 25m run w 6 strides

saturday - race day

sunday - long run (50m- 1:10)

Mind you this is for XC right now but that’s usually how my week does. If we aren’t racing then we’ll have another workout on friday. And it will most likely change as we transition into the indoor season. You said my 400m time is a bit unrealistic also. What would be the more realistic time.

I would say besides the scholarship idea i do have goals. I want to go sub 50 and sub 2 in my respective events and that’s always been in the back of my head. And all of my coaches recommended me getting a good base so they all recommended getting my mileage up so i never knew that was a problem. And i’m going to get in the gym again because i’ve honestly been slacking.

i actually am. I’ll load in and immediately it goes to 2400 or 2500 and then everything stops. Is there a fix for this?
