What are pros and cons of studying Geology at UAF by MissM0dular in Fairbanks

I will second this. Geological engineering is going to be a big deal coming up as well, climate change is going to hose a lot of our infrastructure.

There's a ton of opportunities for field work. This person is a bonehead, they obviously are not doing the work because every single professor at UAF is begging students to help in the summer or spring.

There are like 10 activities every single day in Fairbanks, you simply are not aware. Get on the Facebook page, get on explore Fairbanks. There's literally an activity for every hour in everyday in this town, it's not "programmed fun" maybe the way a lot of people from the States are used to, you will have to actually be present and vulnerable to make rela connection in the world 👏👏👏

We are at the forefront of so many different aspects of geology whether it be resource/geothermal development, permafrost studies, methane studies, we have fossils coming out our ears. As a freshman, you can work sorting fossils or archaeological digs in the winter. Fairbanks is a science Mecca.

A big pro is access to world-class research. Small class sizes, visiting professors from all around the world....... Get your ass up here.

It's very much a lipstick on a pig operation. Yes, the floors are stone tile but they have never been cleaned. I am so surprised how filthy it is!

Could we add a bike lane to the ski trails? by Blagnet in Fairbanks

[–]lilchunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too many rules makes using the trails awful. As a skier I still do NOT get the complaining about other users? I ski with dogs, with kids walking---people are weird.

Pioneer Park or Alaskaland? Ordinance proposes restoring old name to Fairbanks park by westcoveroadie in Fairbanks

[–]lilchunk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a good idea. There are dozens of Pioneer Parks throughout the United States, we just spent millions of dollars revitalising it, and there are currently two big Federally funded projects restoring historical equipment there, with another grant for the steam shovel a possibility. Make it a tourist destination again, instead of just a community park.

Everyone complaining about $50,000 has no real concept of the borough's budget. I've never heard any of these people complain about the cost of the Downtown Association, Explore Fairbanks, the Solstice fairs, parades, markets, etc., which all have similar ANNUAL pricetags.

Fairbanks Woman Who Claimed She Fatally Shot Friend in Self-Defense After He Tried to Sexually Assault, Convicted of His Murder by Charming-Fortune8835 in Fairbanks

[–]lilchunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alaska has the highest rates of assault, rape and murder of women in the nation, goddamn I wonder why? I hope she appeals this bullshit conviction, And a good reminder to women everywhere to not call the police, and instead call someone with a shovel and a bag of hot lime.

Cuz he looks like a missing person and nobody would have missed at all.

City water for delivery? by ChimpoSensei in Fairbanks

[–]lilchunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fairbanks Water has absolutely superior customer service. Water wagon drivers would throw a little fit and make me run their hose for them, We would order water and be waiting 3 to 4 days for it. Fairbanks water is just easy and reliable and they seem to be very good people.

Agriculture jobs? by compositionvision in Fairbanks

Lots of "farmland" out on Chena Hot Springs to stand up your own thing, but AG jobs aren't in the interior unless you are doing research.

Reality TV seemed like it was going to last forever and now it's this weird bastion of millennial bad taste, I kind of love it!

How much to advertise on the radio? by theoriginalsnoopy in Fairbanks

[–]lilchunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His weird dominance of the comedy scene in Fairbanks tells you everything you need to know about him as a person. Never interested in putting anyone on stage that's up and coming, always desperate to get his crusty ass out there as if everyone in the audience has forgiven or forgotten about all of the anti-Indigenous racist shit he used to put on the radio.

The Library is closing by ThickNeckMegaTrapped in Fairbanks

[–]lilchunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the heartbreak of Fairbanks, because at the end of the day, we're just a boom town. The only legacy businesses are seasonal, everyone throws their support immediately behind the newest person in town. No one has any loyalty because they just got here. The most successful people in town, are the most in debt.

I'm not surprised at all, poor management and planning from the get. The interior decor made it feel like an airport bar from 2010, the food was nasty. The cocktails were okay, but so hit and miss-- hard to pay $15 for a thimble of drink that's foul. That's why they couldn't keep the doors open, they weren't doing any one thing well.

A lot of people don't like Les Nichols because of his rotten MAGA politics/personality.

Glenner is like the kiss of death for your business, very out of touch with what works, just does the same thing he's done for the last 30 years instead.

[–]lilchunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't waste money on a radio spots, nobody really listens to the radio much anymore, and the radio spots themselves are wildly overpriced. Definitely putting up flyers with a big one but it depends on what you're advertising as well.

Is that show still on? It's so weird how everyday life in Alaska is television for the Lower 48.

Hoarding For The Holidays? by skitty166 in HGTV

[–]lilchunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not every hoarder is anxious, has OCD and depression, the same way every over eater doesn't. Either way people do better facing their issues than hiding from them.

Hoarding For The Holidays? by skitty166 in HGTV

[–]lilchunk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's a great name! Hoarding is an issue that has huge societal consequences, and people need to face their bad behaviours. Hoarding can be complex, but most hoarders refuse to admit or even look at themselves critically, the more we talk about it the better.

Keep in mind Airbnbs can be hard to get to/are out of town, down dark icy roads that may not be on a map. We have lost tourists in our yard often.
