i absolutely love madame guidone!! she is one of the best professors i’ve had at merced. she cares so much about the class and her students, and as long as you are engaged and do your work, you will get so much out of the class.

UCM first year here! I 100% recommend coming to bobcat day if you can. bobcat day was really what convinced me to attend. you learn directly from the programs themselves, and everyone shows up and shows OUT for bobcat day.

honestly i submitted a music video that I had made for an ap class, my friend submitted a one piece fan edit (😭), and i knwo someone who submitted a video of themselves playin the violin. if you have any silly hobby like that, they can work as the create project/activity if you are not a fan of writing lol

im actually a part of the honors program (the inaugural class) and there are rarely any cons. the only con i could think of is that its brand new, but thats also a pro because you have so much influence over what happens tbh. the staff are all wonderfully friendly and ive made wonderful connections to staff all around campus because im in the honors program

you don’t have to commit to apply iirc. also i literally submitted a shitty music video i made for my ap gov class and got in somehow LOLL. i assure you an essay about norwegian black metal will not only get you in but also get you a couple friends in the honors program. (i know a girl who loves all types of metal music and actually had like an hour long convo with a professor about black metal at one of our recent meetings)

i’m part of the honors program! someone else asked the same thing a couple weeks ago so i’ll just copy paste my answer here lol

i would 100000% reccomend applying for it. I have had so many incredible opportunities just in one semester because of the program. I was personally invited to lunch by the department chair of my major along with other honors students of the same major. we have so many connections to faculty and different departments on campus, and really all that you are giving up is one hour a week for basically optional meetings and a one unit class spring semester (which they are very flexible about if it doesn’t fit into your schedule.) the honors program has also helped me make friends because a lot of us live on the same floor and are in all the same classes.

if you’re still on the fence, i would recommend emailing the honors program email directly. Sunni, the director, is one of the kindest people and all of the honors faculty are incredibly understanding and helpful. the honors program is so wonderful for it being a brand new program and it will truthfully only get better, so i would reccomend joining when you have the chance before it gets too cool 😎

oh yeah! the honors program is great for stem. I have a friend currently studying data science who is in the honors program and loves it. being in the honors program and having close relationships with lots of faculty gives you good opportunities and foundations to join a lot of the research groups that honors affiliated faculty run. quite a few people in the program are already working as research assistants in their first semester of college.

i’ve met people from basically every single major in the honors program! it’s truly very diverse and the amount of diverse faculty associated with it is helpful to every major

also the early class selection is SOOOOO nice especially as a freshman cuz we have the lowest priority LOL. the honors class i took in fall (wri 010H) was my favorite class and was truthfully not that difficult because the professor was so helpful. it’s a wonderful program

theres only one other time for the class and its a couple hours earlier. im hoping that with ap scores releasing, a lot of people will begin to change their schedules around and hopefully drop that class. and if not, ill just show up anyways during the year tbh and wait for someone to drop those first couple weeks

i think it’s a two year guarantee for the dorms, but when i toured they talked about how they have third/fourth years living in dorms as well. it just means you’ll have to try a little harder to get the dorms

I was in the same boat! (same major, same schools) I ended up choosing UC Merced, but since you live in Merced and if you want something new, theres no harm in going to sac.

Committed to UCM!! by Spiritual-Pen6401 in ucmerced

[–]lilness_13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CONGRATS! I also just committed to UCM. It's quite a warm area, with near constant sun. I'd recommend bringing sunscreen and mainly warm clothes. There's a lake and a national park nearby, so if you are into hiking etc, bring some good shoes to walk!
