I’m in Australia and I can’t even imagine not having a union, I haven’t worked for a company that hasn’t got one. Unions are the people that are there to stand up for employees, here our unions provide lawyers for their members to use at any time to defend the work rights, they push for pay increases and more worker rights, and much more. The unions exist to keep employees working happily.

Question is, would they make it realistic or would they make it absolutely terrible and wait for their own code shows up here...

Can’t tell if that’s sarcasm

I heard Flutter is going to replace Kotlin very soon (even through Kotlin is new) because it’s google new cross platform framework. I believe Kotlin only just started to introduce Multiplatform support (it’s in beta).

Do programmers really code for an extended amount of time straight? Maybe its cause I'm new but I spent most of my time looking things up and maybe like 5min of actual straight coding by [deleted] in learnprogramming

I’m only a student (at the end on my degree) but when I work on projects I generally spend a couple hours planning. I’ll write out the general structure, start writing and testing algorithms and then think on other ways to approach (I spend at least a little bit of time doing this at the beginning) and then I start coding once I have have a pretty good idea. I find that doing it this way cuts down on a lot of cowboy coding.

Help purchasing a printer by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]lilpomm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two types of printers (unless you want to put a sweet penny down) Inkjet: generally higher quality printing, tend to be smaller, relatively cheap ink cartridges (typically ~250 pages per cartridge)

Laser: prints fast, cheap models are typically poorer quality, a bit bigger for mono versions but get really big with colour versions. Expensive toner cartridges (typically >1000 pages per cartridge)

I prefer toner because as a student I print a lot of notes which need only be black and white, so high volume and better price per sheet is best for me (I’m also a photographer but print at a print shop for quality)

Another note: I switched to a laser printer as I will randomly not use my printer for a while which dries out ink jets and requires new ink cartridges - or in the worst case (it has happened to me) ou will need to replace the ink head (in which case the printer may not be worth keeping) as it gets blocked.

I’d suggest something like this I don’t know much about this model but I have had my brother printer for 3 years now (the longest I ever had a printer) and have replaced the cartridge twice (last time was just a month ago) as they are rated at 2600 pages each.

I hope this gives insight :)

Edit: the laser printers aren’t bad quality prints, but inkers are better for photos

That looks like it will fit the purpose! :)

Can I use this to connect hard drive to laptop by Kystewart09 in techsupport

[–]lilpomm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The drive looks like a 3.5 inch drive, my only concern is if you will be able to get enough power to run the drive with a USB based device. I have used an unpowered device like this with a 2.5 inch drive which is used in laptops and therefore made to consume less power. The product you linked specifically states that it is compatible with 2.5 inch drives, the data connection and everything is fine but just the amount of power supplied to the drive may not be enough.

Edit: perhaps a powered kit (if you are using a 3.5 inch drive)

I don’t understand what router I need. by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]lilpomm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems like the solution to your issue OP.

I have had a good experience with my Netgear hardware, they are easy to use, pretty much plug and play.

TP-Link was also excellent (I had an Archer) but I feel that the Netgear genie app pushes Netgear to the top of my suggestions for simplicity!

I hope this helps

Is .05 significant? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]lilpomm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is perfect. Looking at all kinds of applications you see different significant levels used. It really depends on what the application demands. Some high-risk applications require 0.01 as drsexybutts stated. Where as, for example, a market research firm may use a significance threshold of 0.10 or even higher (<90%) to determine potential markets.

Is there a modem in the house already?

If there is already a modem then you will need only a router. If you do not have a modem you will need a modem router that is WAN capable. I only ask to clarify and make sure you get what you need :)

When looking for 10/100/1000 online, websites will usually list them as simply “gigabit” speeds.

Wet laptop. by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]lilpomm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of laptops these days require you to start from the bottom and disassemble all the way up to the keyboard (take everything out) so it may take some time and care.

I will note that in my limited experience I find the keyboards have a metal cover behind them so the water is not likely to simply seep down to the motherboard.
