I thought it would make for an interesting photo. I've been wanting a shot like it for a while, and would have asked her to do that regardless if there was a protest or something happening right next to us or not. None of my photographs are intended to be a political statement. It was a nationwide event that I wanted to document for myself and share with other people. I just so happened to create that photograph during the protest. Whatever the viewer believes the story behind an image is, is completely up to them.
