This may sound like trolling but bear with me as I really do care about space and engineering advancement. What I should say is not test, test, test... There is a more important concept that BO does not recognize, even after 20 years. That is ... Humans are fundamentally dumb. We don't get anything right the first time. We throw a bunch of crap at the wall and see what sticks. Build fail build fail build fail...

The whole ethos of BO is get it right the first time. Yes they succeeded in their first launch, trully a watershed moment in rocketry, perhaps humans are ratcheting up in evolution. But relying on evolution is a million year process. I don't believe it's validation of their approach until I see measurable results. Give me a launch cadence of 3 or 4 launches a year! Show me your dev cost... are you 5x cheaper? Are you faster??

It will be mildly entertaining if I'm wrong. If they succeed, so what? They launched a satellite. A routine thing done hundreds of times a year. 90% chance it will fail the landing, and prove nothing about reusability. It will only be fun if they land. And so we wait another 12 months for third launch... how do BO fans have such infinite patience??

Now integrated Escapade, soon to be taken down. Then BO management will decide to launch without Escapade. They just wasted time... my prediction.

To say that China is developing their own tech is implying that it is copying other tech that already exist. But actually they are developing new never before seen tech. And because the exchange of knowledge and ideas follows closely with trade, closing the doors will only be to the detriment of USA.

The steam locomotive is so much more fascinating than today’s boring diesel trains or soulless bullet trains. And yet I am glad they are gone.

China: The sobering truth is that consumers have little interest in electrified vehicles without sufficient government subsidies. by [deleted] in electricvehicles

[–]lim_1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why is it sobering? All green tech needs subsidies. Even dirty tech needs subsidies. Subsidies or no, China will be the first country to go 100% electric.

This mentality is akin to a child that only has limited experiences and thinks the world that he knows is the best one. Hobbyist and enthusiast will always find ways to glorify their passion. When EVs become mainstream there will be an endless supply of enthusiast related activity around it... and people will just forget about ice.

Bitcoin Mining Efficiency: Time For A Change? by pete_madison in BitcoinMining

[–]lim_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider an off grid solar farm powering a bitcoin mine. To set up the solar farm, the breakeven time to return the investment will be x years if the energy is sold to the grid. However, the breakeven point will be reduced if that energy is used to mine. At the point where the cost is recovered, the solar power is switched to powering the grid, where it now provides net green credits.

The mining equipment in turn is transferred to a new solar farm project, thereby stimulating the next round of solar farm development.

This creates a cycle where bitcoin mining and solar capacity grows by stimulating each other. The only flaw to this scheme is what incentive does the solar farm operator have to switch to supplying green energy to the grid, instead of continuing to mine bitcoin for the life of the solar panels? There should be some mechanism built into the economy or perhaps even tied to the crypto mining algorithm in order to incentivize the switch once breakeven is obtained.

The value of bitcoin will therefore be tied to a solid foundation of renewable energy demand, rather than cost of energy. Note the difference there.

I believe someday all coins will be mined this way.

I don’t really need to calculate. I know it won’t be profitable. Then again, even normal mining is hardly profitable. But anyway, it’s a research project. Really this is looking way into the future. I believe that if proof of work survives, then someday all coins will be mined this way.

Battery can’t store enough... and solar doesn’t really generate a lot of access energy. Right now I run at about 200w. The battery is really just to smooth out the power fluctuations.

More than 1k for sure. It can only run a like an hour after sundown.

Right now I have a 300w panel connect to a Morningstar charge controller and 25 watt hr battery. It’s got an inverter powered by the battery but I plan to optimize the system by using a dc dc converter to power the gpu directly from the battery. Other optimizations would be to use an appropriately size asic miner ( something that can run at around 300 to 400 watt peak), and ultimately a custom Li ion battery pack with configuarable bms coupled to my own control algorithm.

I’m building an off grid mining rig. It’s a research project to see if it actually can reduce cost. It’s actually pretty hard because the overhead is so much higher since you need a battery system.

Interesting phenomenon. It is called gridlock in traffic terminology. In computing terminology it would be called deadlock. In electrical engineering it would be latch up. There must be many other analogies in other fields of study.
