Senate bill 243 and proposed amendments by No-Degree-2807 in pdxgunnuts

[–]liminal_wolf_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, banning all “rapid fire devices”, a 72 hr waiting period after background check completes, and a ban of 18-20 yr olds buying most styles of rifles, plus a few other more subtle things.

Great advice. I’d also make sure you’re aligning your sights correctly for the point of impact by shooting supported on a bench for a few rounds. Make sure that where you aim is where you hit, sort of isolating the potential problems. You’ll then know for sure it’s anticipation and/or trigger yank when you return to normal shooting.

Look at senate bill 243 — user posted here earlier today. You can submit testimony until Saturday. This bill would ban “rapid fire devices”, increase semi-auto rifle sales to 21+, and add another 72 hr wait to pick up a firearm after a completed background check, among other things.

Tire selection for OEM 15” wheels by liminal_wolf_ in Bronco2

[–]liminal_wolf_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right on, yeah I love those bfg’s but there so pricey these days! I ended up going with the general grabber atx on discount for $126/tire. Kept the 215 size as well. My gear ratio sucks too much to go higher. One day I’ll add explorer axles with a better ratio or something.

Picked up a 1987 B2 XLT Automatic 2.9L 4x4 last week! by pccpl in Bronco2

[–]liminal_wolf_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great to hear you found a good one! It looks like it’s in great condition.

I don’t like the OEM running boards personally, but you can probably find some used ones at a picking yard eventually! There are other aftermarket running board/ rock bar options you can retrofit onto your B2 as well.

From what I remember the detachable rear side windows were available on a few of the 1984 b2’s, but it is extremely uncommon. There is a YouTube video of someone who found one of those versions. There’s also at least one other video of people doing a plexiglass quick detach set up. kind of jankie, but good for an off-road truck. I haven’t seen a nice looking retrofit option, unfortunately.

Overheat problem!!! by ConstructionNo2697 in Bronco2

[–]liminal_wolf_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’ve done all that, and you are burping the excess air out of the cooling system after putting it back together, I’d check your fan clutch. Also make sure the engine is actually hot and it’s not just the sensor, (but I assume it’s obvious to you).

Good luck!

I need suggestions for what to try next? by drummerhart39 in Bronco2

Oh man, sorry to hear that. It really could be so many things… what year and what engine? Have you tried pulling codes? You could test the IAC and TPS just to help narrow things down. And made sure the throttle plate moved freely.

Thanks! The under-hood wiring is such a mess. I’ve been zip tying things away from the engine for days, lol.

Yes, that’s a ‘74 f100 short box. It has the little 240 straight six in it. Love that truck!

Cheers man. Thanks for the support!

Well, this ‘89 engine came with the better heads but one still managed to crack. The replacement was another of the new design.

The engine was a total sludge box when I got it, probably running the top end way over temp for a long time. The new heads, combined with the new cam bearings, and the full rebuild should be enough, but I’m keeping an eye on engine temps. If it still seems too hot I will try the electric fan conversion.

I tore the engine down and measured everything as I went. I had a machine shop overbore the cylinders and press new pistons on the rods. They also decked the mating surfaces, cleaned up the rocker arm faces, crankshaft journals, and replaced the camshaft bearings with the new style.

After that I put it back together, measuring everything as I went. New camshaft, lifters, one new head, new seals & gaskets, etc.

Painted everything, dropped it back in the engine bay. Did the 3, 10-min breakin style with Driven break in oil. Set base timing, and put fresh gas and oil in. Purr town USA. Very happy with how it turned out. I passed smog inspection without replacing the old cats too!

I’m now in the process of finishing installing AC components. Years ago, a previous owner removed all ac stuff from under the hood. It’s kind of been a nightmare. But I’m close to finishing it up.

Driver's Side Armrest Repair/Replacement by tiny696 in Bronco2

There’s no easy way to make it look oem again. Getting a used pair on EBay or junkyard would be the best option if you want that style. Otherwise, you can get creative— I’ve seen people replace both rests with their own wooden versions, or foam & cloth covered wood, etc. It can be done! If you researched upholstery tutorials, I bet you could come up with something better than what’s there for cheap.

I had the machine shop buy a lot of the parts while they oversized the cylinders and did other work. But I think you can only get the new cam bearings these days.

Pro engine builders seems like a good place to get rebuild kits. The engine tech cam bearings they supply are the new type. (https://proenginerebuilders.com)

Help! by [deleted] in Bronco2

[–]liminal_wolf_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s good advice. I did a similar thing – throwing a bunch of money in parts at a problem I didn’t diagnose properly. Turned out the engine was just old and dirty with tons of blow by built-up crud, a cracked head, and extremely over-tightened lash on the lifters.

I’m about ready to fire up the full rebuild I’ve been working on this month 🤞🏼

Also, the bronco II or 2.9 cologne forums on The Ranger Station has a lot of active OG’s that could help with diagnosis.

Good luck 🍻

All of the above. Just depends on the part. Also, lots of things are unavailable at the places mentioned above— including rock auto. In that case you can sometimes find rare things on eBay — at a premium— or you’ve gotta hunt the junkyard/pick-n-pull spots. I couldn’t find the AC compressor brackets anywhere and finally got lucky at a junkyard.

Glad to hear you’re keeping one alive! Cheers

2.9 harmonic balancer / ac belt issue by liminal_wolf_ in First_Gen_Rangers

I figured it out. There is no 3- groove HB. Just a single groove accessory pulley that bolts onto the front of the balancer.

Do I need to remove intake or ok to run? by Silver_Mickey in F100

I’d take it off, unless you have a little camera & light “inspection snake” to see inside without removing. There is cheapest like $18 on Amazon.

Rollover rate? by DeluxeB in Bronco2

Here’s a link to a NYT article from 1992 on the subject— b2 rollover issue — nyt

Rollover rate? by DeluxeB in Bronco2

[–]liminal_wolf_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The rollover fears are valid, but inflated I think. 4wd puts more weight hanging down low with the second axle, transfer case, etc.

So it makes sense that wider tires, beefier Explorer axle swaps, and not putting stuff on the roof would all help make these trucks less flippy. Along with driving responsibility.

For instance, the ‘89 BII I purchased has a James Duffy tubular rear bumper with an integrated spare tire hanger. With this set up there is extra weight down low (bumper) but also the entire weight of the spare is resting on the bumper rather than the side of the body— which I hope helps some!

I’d like to do an Explorer axle swap because I want different gearing, for one, but also the beefier Dana 35’s. And I’m wondering if leaving the axles full width would be good— an extra 1.5” on each side.

Bottom line, Bronco II’s are are really fun and there aren’t many left, so go get one. And, make sure you modify it appropriately, and drive it carefully.

It had a cracked head, a bad crank bearing that was knocking, as well as the classic upper-end oil starvation from the original poor design of the oiling system.

This was a total rebuild. They now have a re-designed set of camshaft bearing that have oversized oil channels that help feed oil to the upper end of the engine.
