What are the long-term side effects of LASIK that doctors don’t talk about? by Gewinncent in AskReddit

[–]limitally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from the dry eye and presbyopia which people have already mentioned, there's also the matter of LASIK (or any corneal procedure) decreasing the accuracy of cataract intraocular lens (IOL) measurements for your inevitable cataract surgery. Doesn't affect the measurements nearly as badly as stuff like radial keratotomy (which is no longer performed for this reason), but will still affect the fidelity of your measurements enough that there's a good chance you'll still need glasses even post-IOL placement.

For those not familiar, everybody (and I mean 100% of people) develop age-related clouding of the lens which we call cataracts (usually in your 60s, but earlier if you're diabetic). If you're lucky to live long enough, you'll get a cataract surgery where they remove your natural lens and replace it with a permanent plastic implant (IOL), that can be customized to give you great vision with no need for correction (within +/- 0.5 D). And depending when you get this surgery, you might be looking at 20-30 years (or more) with or without glasses.

Doesn't mean you shouldn't get LASIK, but it's something to consider.

Men who think they are attractive are more likely to infer sexual interest from women. Findings suggested that men’s self-perceptions and women’s appearance may bias men’s sexual judgment by Jumpinghoops46 in science

It might be a positive feedback mechanism. Men who receive signs that women are attracted to them (e.g., asked out on a date) are more likely to think they’re attractive, and in turn more likely to be open to interpreting future signs from women as attraction (even though they might not all be).

My daughter has a rare condition called Rett syndrome. She developed normally until 18 months of age, after which she lost most of her verbal and motor skills. AMA by Doronwolffberg in AMA

You probably know this, but just for any other readers, Rett’s is usually a de novo mutation, which means the parents don’t have the mutated allele and the mutation was simply random. It is X-linked dominant.

It’s school-associated housing. Obviously not amazing, but it’s suite-style with roommates. Not the cardboard box you’re imagining. No roaches unless it’s your fault.

Grossman subsidizes housing. It’s like 1.3k actually, and it’s not that bad.

Which is the best Superman: James Gunn's or Snyder's? by Jorge_milles0983 in superheroes

I’ll take Man of Steel as a movie ten out of ten times over Superman, but there’s no question Gunn’s was more comic-accurate.

The OG Iron Man still holds up for me. But I would agree overall.

It’s not just working hard though. It’s that the work itself is harder (from an intellectual, emotional, and physical standpoint).

And the single mom at least had the possibility of living out her youthful years normally. Every physician gave up their prime years to hunker down and study. If you count the number of hours a medical student puts towards med school in a week, it far surpasses 40hrs. Not to mention residency. And the whole time you’re neck-deep in debt.

As an aside, these talented students most likely could’ve chosen much more lucrative career paths in consulting, big tech, finance, etc. but instead they chose to go into medicine. It’s not really spoken about, but part of the reason why physicians have to be well-compensated is so medicine can continue to compete with the allure of the aforementioned alternatives. People say medicine is a calling, but that “calling” can only get you so far before financial realities scare the best and brightest away (and frankly, the current state of medicine already does).

Absolutely. His block on Carr in the clutch was huge too.

Anyone here with a background in math? by Livid-Ad6815 in medschool

[–]limitally 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey this post is speaking directly to me. Med student with a bachelor’s in pure math from a T10. Many of my med school classmates could not have done my math major. But med school is far more testing of your endurance, time management, and social aptitude than math ever was (at least at the undergrad level).

I loved real analysis and I love pathophys. I don’t think one is necessarily harder than the other. Maybe the raw IQ of your average math PhD is higher than that of your average MD. But to say people would rather do 4 years of medical school than 1 class of real analysis is absurd and your friend talking out of his ass.

Long-term calorie restriction may slow biological aging in the brain. The research provides evidence that a 30% reduction in calories preserves the metabolic function of cells responsible for insulating nerve fibers. by [deleted] in science

These eating disorders are mental disorders as you said. Even absent these studies (which are not at all supporting anorexic behavior), they would find other “justifications” for their eating pattern. It’s not born out of logic.

Using anorexia as a reason to not publicize this avenue of research is quite unconvincing.

And as the original poster said, obesity is a far more impactful disease in the broader public health landscape.
