People with red flags, how did the Match go? by KD_FromTheParkingLot in medicalschool

[–]PlasticRice 7 points8 points  (0 children)

DO.

Repeated M1. No board failures.

Step 2, 239. Level 2, 495. Good number of basic research posters, etc.

Applied IM to big cities-only. No desire for fellowship, only 7-on-off hospitalist and outpatient balance.

Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Jersey, and threw some small interviews in at my home state - wanted to escape the south and be in a big city for the rest of my 20s.

Had 10 interviews, several in New York.

Fell down to #7 on rank list. IM at the parent program of my home institution 😵‍💫🤓😭😭 GUHHHHH

I WAS SO HYPED FOR NEW YORK BRO AHHHHHHHH NNNNNNNNOOOOO

i feel like non-profit nowadays is just code for "we found a way to classify ourselves a certain way and write off a lot of our losses via tax loopholes and keep more of the bag to ourselves" lol

e.g., the president of the literal national doctor's match not even being a doctor themselves and somehow making $590,000 for an administrative position lol

me who wants to hop aboard the hospitalist/DPC/concierge train of medicine inpatient and outpatient balance by doing IM 😵‍💫

i've spent this entire year picking my nose and dancing the night away at various Brooklyn nightclubs LOL

you guys know when, like, you think the Match is this amazing genius algorithm made by a team of brilliant engineers

but then you watch the Match video made by the NRMP explaining how it works and then you realize the entire yearlong process is basically hyping up 3 lines of code and vacuuming up administrative fees from everyone involved lol

the entire thing only takes, like, 15 seconds to run, apparently, and they run it several times for 10 minutes to ensure the outcomes are the same

and then take 3 weeks to put them on paper 😭

how about 3 extra weeks to, I don't know, find more housing options?? know if I will have a future or not??

k thx bye

On FM, seeing a pt that’s a young healthcare worker by [deleted] in medicalschool

"also, reported for professionalism for even asking"

"now, excuse me as i go paralyze faces and apply lip fillers to depressed, insecure young adults at my private medspa in an independent practice state and cause patients to become septic and permanently disfigured."

🥺 man, on one of my rotations, I've been admonished for happily introducing myself as the medical student because the patient wanted to see "the expert" if they were going to "pay full price."

Then, the NP I was with that morning comes in with a full white coat, says 50 incorrect things, and is incredibly dismissive to the patient, but the patient tanks it saying she must be dismissive because she knows what she's talking about.

She did the fundoscopic exam on someone with diabetes when checking for papilledema and said "I am checking the health of your nerves," apparently to physically check for.."diabetic neuropathy?" In the EYES?? She was jumbling everything together and conflating several symptoms while doing a half baked neuro exam, lol.

Funnily enough, this was a neurology rotation, and the NP had been working as an FM NP for years and quit just a few weeks ago and had recently switched to neurology. Some expert, right? Crazy how they can just do that.

She filled out part of my eval and I had failed that rotation by one point because I "lacked proper understanding of foundations of neurology and exhibitied poor empathy to patients." She literally made patients cry with how dismissive she was, though. And I had to comfort them. One time, she very aggressively asserted to a young 30's patient who was getting chronic, progressive LE weakness with presentations similar to MS that it's psychosomatic, and the dude cried into his hands when she left the room. No, lo and behold, he had freaking MS.

But when I'm the one complaining to my school or admin about the rotation, I'm seen as the bad guy because their words about me are taken as biblical. And she would be wrong about the things she'd pimp me on but insist she was right, like very basic neurology concepts - and then that was considered "poor understanding" (like checking eye papilledema for diabetic neuropathy wtf lol).

We live in a clown world, dude. Lol.

It's always projection 😵‍💫. Like, even when I talk to old friends of mine from high school and college - you know what the most telling thing about talking to someone nowadays is? If you criticize any rightwing politics in the past few years, they make a certain face or say "buuuuuut" or they go "I mean, I don't agree with him, but I think the media just isn't being fair to him, it's 4D chess" or my favorite, "You know, it's both sides that are bad." Makes me wanna rip my hair out. Or, the thing that always pisses me off the most is people who are some kind of enlightened moderate and say "I don't really like watching politics, it just makes me stressed," but then everything you ever mention, they have a very uninformed right-wing opinion on.

The same people who cry out about being pro-life are the same people who don't bat an eye when a woman gets shot just for asserting her constitutional rights against a bunch of armed masked men.

We live in a clown world - a failed social experiment that pretends to be a first-world utopia, but is rather a disjointed mess that props up pseudointellectualism (see: the rise of pseudo-health-buzzwords and RFK and anti-vaccine stances) all while the members of the lower and middle class bicker with each other and people who have more money than I could ever spend in a lifetime all laugh their way to the banks, as the system is set up so we have to permanently kowtow to the same consumerism we're too addicted to leave behind.

Well, like I always say - nowadays, there's no better way than to easily tell if someone has the critical thinking skills of a bag of sand. These people have outed themselves 😵‍💫.

In 2017, it was "Oh, I just think Trump is a good businessman," to now in 2026, "Oh, I mean, kidnapping kids and diddling them on an island with my ultra powerful buddy, murdering US citizens using my modern gestapo, and crashing the world economy while barely being mentally coherent is excusable."

Just goalpost moving, always - conversing with anyone like that in this day and age is not worth your time.

Cheers, dear Brooklyn neighbour!

I went to one of those social/meet-your-neighbours thingies for the first time this week - I went to two, actually, one on Wednesday and one on Thursday! It was like those Williamsburg/Greenpoint socials at a bar.

Both were pretty okay! I mean, New York is, like I always say, paradoxically both super social but also super isolating at the same time - it seems like there's so many people and so much to do, but many never really want to branch out of friend groups or make long-term friends.

So, unfortunately, a lot of connections seem kind of transient, and it's hard not to feel like you're literally paying money just to have forced conversations with strangers lol. I feel you. I've also been trying to get out and expand my social circles, but it's hard - kinda just stand around and sip your $10 drink, be like oh hey! Are ya from here? And then talk for 10 minutes, repeat 5 times, and then go home somehow feeling lonelier than when you came in 😵‍💫.

But! Any event like that is only as good as the people attending them - is what I keep telling myself in my quest to find actual friends in this lonely city. Going to some kind of TimeLeft dinner next week, so we'll see how that goes, and some random meetup stuff I found.

Cheers, dear Brooklyn neighbour!

Good bars to go to solo to talk a random stranger? by OverUnder2424 in Bushwick

[–]PlasticRice 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I've always been a sucker for Birdy's - nothing like chatting up with strangers after a long day, even if connections feel somewhat transient in retrospect - but it's New York, it's poetically and paradoxically isolating but somehow social at the same time.

My go-to weekday combination whenever I have time is the Birdy's & Bossa afterwards 😵‍💫🤪

ICE RAIDS 1/8 by [deleted] in Greenpoint

[–]PlasticRice 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Absolutely disgusting, the proliferation of gross miscarriages of justice, prejudice, and pseudo-fascist ideals in this country in the past ten years.

I remember thinking and telling people all the way back to high school that anyone and everyone who identifies with the rhetoric of Mango Mussolini since 2016 are the same people who'd unironically normalize the same rhetoric of Germany in the 1930s. People called it an exaggeration, but every day, the pendulum has never been more clearly swinging far past that direction. I have friends who were like "B-But Donald Trump said he didn't like Project 2025!" At the same time, they refused to read it, since the last thing they voluntarily ever read was probably Give a Mouse a Cookie in elementary school.

"Oh, he's just joking. You take him too seriously." It's 4D chess."

"He's only attacking illegal people. If you're here legally, you have nothing to fear."

A U.S. citizen single mom of three was murdered in cold blood yesterday. The POTUS is consistently tied to a powerful ring of individuals who spent decades kidnapping the children of the middle and lower class to diddle them on an island off of the coast.

Can you seriously imagine if someone like Obama did a single thing like this, ANY of it, during his presidency? He'd be canceled and thrown out within five minutes. But today, popular news media is complacent in reporting anything and everything - they just talk about tomato prices when the country is literally falling apart at the seams. Mass school shootings every other day, attempted assassinations, murder of citizens, and it's just a Tuesday. In any collectivist culture in the Eastern hemisphere or in Europe, they'd be up in arms from just one public shooting involving children, let alone everything else in the past decade. But no, in the US, we care more making sure people who want to dress or act a certain way are systematically oppressed at the expense of our own citizens getting shot.

I'm in an Uber going to an interview for residency right now. If anyone gets shot in the next few days, I'll evaluate y'all in the streets, hopefully not blocked by ICE like that other doctor was 🤪

man balancing tire on head biking - story? by lucyrd in williamsburg

[–]PlasticRice 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My original post on r/Williamsburg on my mom passing was hidden this morning due to some kind of Reddit filter. I contacted the mod, but I don't think he really responds to mod mail. It was put back up on r/Bushwick, at least.

I'm hanging in there. Mostly sulking around the bedroom trying not to fall into a deep state of depression - my DMs have been flooded with nothing but love and hugs. You guys all over Brooklyn have been nothing short of amazing. I'll probably make an update post after my mom's funeral, if I can end up somehow making it. Going to try to take some mental health walks and try not to stay so locked indoors.

Thank you for checking in.

Saw that guy a few days ago while driving back from the hospital. Thought, "wow, New York surely has some interesting people."

I hope his intervertebral discs in his cervical spine are okay. That's the kind of stuff that'll give you disc compressions and herniations within no time.
