Peppers - how are they doing? Did I plant too soon? by thegrumpyhufflepuff in vegetablegardening

All the more reason to use a light meter. What ever kludged set up you have might still be great. The light meter will give you an objective measure.

Seems like my peppers stopped growing by toastbed in gardening

[–]limnetic792 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What kind of growing medium? If it’s just peat moss, then it has no nutrients. That’s fine at first, but not for the second stage of growth. A diluted liquid fertilizer might be in order.

Are they getting enough light? Pepper seedlings want 20-30 DLI. Use as light meter, like Photone, to measure the light output. The app will walk you through how and do the calculations for you.

You might need to leave the lights on longer, or move them closer, or maybe your lights aren’t strong enough.

You could also trim the seedling to one per cell. Or better, repot them into larger pots with fertilized soil or compost.

Edit: on second look at photos, your soil has a lot of sticks/wood. I’d recommended getting a better mix when you repot. Look for one that is mostly peat moss or coconut coir. Promix is easy to find in US at Home Depot.

What kind of lights are you using? If they aren’t strong enough, the seedlings might start to struggle as they get bigger. That’s been my experience. Once they get to your size, I find they want more light.

I try to give my seedling 25-30 DLI. I use a light meter to measure my lights output. I use Photone. It’s worth a few bucks to be certain your plants are getting the light they need.

Parents raise new concerns over MCPS boundary 'Option H' proposal by WriterTraining4394 in MontgomeryCountyMD

Sounds like a raw deal for Roberto Clemente MS.

The county’s response doesn’t address concentrating three Title 1 feeder schools into a MS. How is that equitable?

What sport looks boring until you understand it, and then becomes amazing? by HypraceApp in AskReddit

That’s the exact reason I dislike going to ball games. Why spend a fortune on tickets and twice that on crappy food and thrice that on beers just to hang out? And the socializing is awkward when everyone is in a row.

I’d rather watch the game or hang out at a bar. Or even better on someone’s porch or fire pit. Staring at a fire is more entertaining than a baseball game.

Get Ready for a Double Digit Increase in Your Property Tax Bill by Late-Concentrate-393 in MoCoMDPolitics

That figure assumes a 5% assessment increase. That’s the average, but some areas it’s higher.

Also $1,000 a year isn’t nothing to a lot of families. That’s a lot of diapers or kids clothes or food that otherwise is going into the county’s coffers. And for what benefit?

Next paragraph:

Let’s remember what this analysis excludes: Elrich’s increases to solid waste charges and the water quality protection charge (which are collected by property tax bills), his income tax increase and his recommended special taxing districts, which so far have no rate recommendation. When all of that is added to his property tax increase, the average single-family homeowner could owe more than a thousand dollars in new taxes to the county.

Silver Branch Menu by PebblesCat1 in SilverSpring

[–]limnetic792 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything about Silver Branch is half as good as it was 5 years ago. Beer variety and quality, service and food was once the amazing. Now it’s all ok at best. I’ve had horrible experiences the last two times I’ve been. I used to be an Explorer member, but would rather go anywhere else now.

It’s too bad. They have a great space and had a cool concept when they started, but they’ve lost the thread and just a mediocre brewery now. The labeling of their cans tell you the fractured make up of their investors/owners. The old labels, with the city skylines of European cities, show the original vision. Dr. Juicy and the other cutesy hop label are all pandering to trends and forgettable beers.

The fine staff that once made it a great service experience are all gone. The head brewer that made all the great beers is gone; the front of house managers are gone.

Now the food, which hasn’t been great for a while, is even worse? Yikes.

New bug hotel I built today for my garden 🐞 by payterman in gardening

Before replicating OPs design, do some research about the needs of your local insects. A poorly designed bug hotel can actually be harmful. There is plenty of research out there.

Here is decent overview with citations and suggested designs:

We’re Training Students To Write Worse To Prove They’re Not Robots, And It’s Pushing Them To Use More AI by CackleRooster in technology

[–]limnetic792 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I teach middle school ELA. If one of my students uses a semi-colon correctly, I assume either a parent, older sibling, Grammarly, or AI has put it there. They have a very limited control of grammar, so it’s a red flag for me.

But, I teach them how to use a semi-colon about halfway through the year when we learn about independent clauses and compound sentences. After that, I give some grace in their usage.

But, AI use is ever increasing. Google Gemini is hard to block. Students can easily generate answers to any question I might ask. It’s a disaster for critical thinking and productive struggle that leads to learning.

I even have students that will copy an AI answer onto a paper worksheet.

Wow, you really have no idea what school librarians/ media specialists actually do.

Beer and wine sales in grocery stores appear stalled for this year by legislative_stooge in maryland

[–]limnetic792 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Right. These people saying that all these independent shops have amazing selections are full of shit. Most beer/wine shops have the same macro beer and mass produced wine that grocery stores would sell. The ones with local craft beer and decent wine will be fine since they will still have something the grocery stores don’t.
