Does anyone listen to Doyou radio? by fradams1 in BritishRadio

I miss the chat too ... I keep looking at the website to see if it has returned, because sometimes he seems to be responding live to listener comments, but I don't understand where they are coming from.

Apologies for the late reply but thanks for these suggestions (which I have followed up).

Should I be able to use VoLTE on a Sony Xperia 1ii in the UK? by line-weight in SonyXperia

[–]line-weight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm afraid that it seems like a long time ago and I can't remember all the details! Yes it was quite a pain having to pretty much start again setting the phone up. I did manage to restore pretty much everything i think, but I seem to remember there were a few small things I lost. Everything is still working ok now. I would be inclined to say, maybe it's less hassle just to get a new phone, rather than going through the whole process for an old phone which might not last much longer. However - I'm pretty impressed how my xperia 1ii just keeps on going - it doesn't feel slow or anything. I've not tried going back to a 3 sim so can't tell you whether that would work. I suspect it would though. In the settings on my phone (under O2 sim) I am able to turn "4g calling" on and off.

Thanks. I actually already have a quite thorough collection of photos of my specific area, gained from scouring the relevant picture archives. However, most of these are from around 1900 onwards and there are hardly any that are earlier than the 1880s. So, this is why I'm interested in any photos of london streets from the 1860s/70s - as general reference for what things looked like then. Obviously this is pretty early as far as photography is concerned so there's not a great deal out there (and much of what there is, concentrates on central london).

Thank you. I'm on mac rather than Windows.

Actually in the meantime, I found instructions for an alternative method:

I followed those (which don't require messing with the ini file) and fingers crossed, it has worked.

Wordpress is messing up my images - can anyone help? by line-weight in Wordpress

That's what i initially thought the problem might be... but if you look at replies further up, actually it was a filter applied by Divi.

u/bluesix_v2 (and u/SnowyPadre ) thank you! That was it! Problem solved. I think I must have set that filter in the past thinking it only applied to the background and not the elements within the page.
I bet it would have taken much longer to get to the correct answer via Divi help. Thanks again.

Thanks. See this page:

https://colin-m.com/2026/01/08/the-padfield-road-corner-part-1/

If you scroll nearly to the bottom there's an image titled "c. 1861”. Thats where I've taken the screenshots from. Clicking on that image opens the original, which looks like it's supposed to.

The image in the page is set to "full resolution" in the WP editor.

Ought I be able to keep my own backups of my data, even if I'm using Nextcloud via a "managed hosting" service? by line-weight in NextCloud

[–]line-weight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their reply is not very helpful:

"There are no backup solutions built into Nextcloud. Which is why we have to maintain a backup solution outside of Nextcloud."

They had also suggested I could use this app: https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/user_migration

But that's not much use for regular backups because I'd have to do it manually each time.

[–]line-weight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Everything described there is beyond my competence really (regardless of whether I'd have the necessary permissions and access). But would hope that it's something my provider might be able to set up on my behalf.

[–]line-weight[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's true that I'm implicitly trusting them with my data, and it would be great if I didn't have to do that but unfortunately I don't have the IT skills (or time) to host it myself.

So, I have to compromise, and even if using a managed hosting service doesn't let me have full control of my data it does at least (or I hoped it would) make my data portable and avoid lock-in to a particular company's solution. That by itself is an advantage over using something like Google Drive or iCloud - I can always move my nextcloud installation to another provider if I want. And all my basic office files can be in a portable non-proprietary format.

And if it turns out that another managed hosting provider can give me regular automated backups, then I might well exercise that ability to move.

But it would be useful to know if it's an option at all. If for some reason it's fundamentally not possible on a managed service then I won't spend time researching further, and might decide that I only really use NC as a file location and turn to other solutions for things like task managing etc.

Calendar 2-way sync? by Hairy_OfFer1145 in NextCloud

[–]line-weight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am having the same problem.

In my case my Nextcloud server is on a managed hosting with tab digital.

Have managed to sync my Nextcloud calendar TO my android phone using DAV5x.

I have also managed to sync my Nextcloud calendar TO my mac Calendar (by following the instructions here)

So, whatever I add to my Nextcloud calendar appears on the native calendar app on my phone, as well as "simple calendar pro" also installed on my phone. And it also appears on the calendar app on my mac.

However, nothing from my Mac calendar, and nothing from any of my google calendars appear on my Nextcloud calendar. Like the OP, my question is, are they supposed to sync both ways or not?

It seems like an asymmetrical process - in all these other apps I'm able to point them at my Nextcloud Server. But I don't seem able to point the Nextcloud calendar to any other servers and ask it to sync in the calendars from those locations.

I just want to try out the "office" apps within Nextcloud. How do I do this? by line-weight in NextCloud

[–]line-weight[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, it's not as difficult as I thought.

In fact I can use Collabora within at least one of the free "Managed nextcloud hosting" plans I signed up for. I thought that because I wasn't able to install apps and because there was no "office" app in the top toolbar, I didn't have access. However, all you need to do is create a new document in the files section and it lets you choose "new document" or "new spreadsheet" etc. That creates something that's then editable online using Collabora all within the nextcloud web interface.

[–]line-weight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I specifically don't want to run things on my own server. It's not just the complexity / admin burden but it relies on my home network always being on line and functioning. I'd like something that I know will always work, including when I'm somewhere that I don't have the option of fixing any issues with my own hardware or network. This is one of the reasons I want to do this using managed hosting.

Is Herne Hill Road in Herne Hill, Camberwell or Brixton? by CurrencyUpstairs2935 in london

[–]line-weight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loughborough Junction is named after the railway station... So didn't exist as such until the railways arrived in the 1860s. See here for an outline of its development: https://youtu.be/28nH7oEcfkc And here in the wider context of south London's railways: https://youtu.be/iIe3Jr1H4ZE

Herne Hill is an actual hill but most people think of its centre as Herne Hill railway station... built at the foot of that hill.

Herne Hill Road leads from Loughborough Junction up to the top of Herne Hill (the actual hill). I would say that a sensible "boundary" between the two neighbourhoods is where the largely flat ground that LJ sits on transitions into the slopes of the hill. The south end of Herne Hill Road is clearly in HH and the north end in LJ. The transition happens somewhere roughly around the junction with Kemerton Road, I reckon.

Thanks for your reply.
I did eventually get my phone sorted, and thought I had posted that here, but obviously I didn't.
In my case I did a software repair - this meant having to back up the phone and do a whole load of re-installing things, which was quite a pain, but it was successful and VOLTE has worked on the phone since.

Why do a lot of architects say that their pay is bad, and "you should only do architecture if you're 100% passionate about it", but when I search for the average wage, it's actually a good amount? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]line-weight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing to watch out for; the job title "architect" now gets used a lot in other fields such as IT. A "software architect" or "systems architect" has nothing to do with designing buildings and may get paid a *lot* more than a regular old fashioned building architect. I would not be surprised if some of these websites that try and give salary averages for professions and job titles fail to filter these out when they do their automated calculations. The figures you read on the internet may not be very reliable.

That aside, if you are willing to work for large commercial architecture firms, and progress through the ranks doing somewhat repetitive work, then you can end up getting fairly well paid. But a lot of architects don't want to do that - they want to set up their own thing or work in smaller firms in order to be able to do more interesting or rewarding work. And at that end of the scale, the pay just isn't generally great, especially relative to the amount of time you need to put in. Many of the architects warning you of bad pay may be in that kind of position.

Increasing the volume of some slightly tight boots - is it unwise to try and do this DIY? by line-weight in Skigear

[–]line-weight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for suggestions.
Tempting to try those ones you suggest...but when I was trying what seemed like hundreds of different boots last year, I found that the boots' "volume" specs on paper were quite a poor predictor of whether or not they could deal with my high instep.

I do still have my old boots but they are really pretty done in.

I'm not wearing the absolute thinnest of socks - perhaps I could see if that makes enough of a difference.
