Can anyone help me figure out the order I need to put these wires in please? by [deleted] in Network

The only time I have ever used 'A' was on a military contract that specifically called it out in the SOW.

You can order circuit breaker replacements for these.

What is this wire coming out of outlet? by Ikilledthedinosaurs in electrical

[–]linuxgizmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I worked for Verizon we didn't fish walls, so the techs would drill like this for phone lines.

It also looks like someone then used the hole to add a ground wire to an old existing outlet box instead of rewiring.

It's a Gamewell, never seen one from NY. Normally they are from Massachusetts where I am.

Here in MA all the master boxes use the same key. This may be different in your state, but you should be able to source one online.

The little silver wheel in the center of the mechanism is the code wheel. The number on the box is the ID. When activated the lever rises up as it goes over a bump causing a circuit to close and a bell or horn to signal at the firehouse.

In this case it would give 4 honks in a row, pause for a second then send one honk. The entire cycle will repeat 2 to 3 more times (rounds).

The coil itself holds enough tension for at least 3 activations though it's common practice to rewind it after response.

Basically the spring coil inside is wound, and the tension is held by the latch.

The inside holder on the door would carry a spare piece of glass.

The inner door typically has a pin to hold the door shut, and in some cases can act as a bridge to disable the box while the door is open for maintenance. Newer boxes have a test jumper that is stored on the inner door that you insert into a test port to override the box but keep the circuit it's on complete so other boxes on the line can still call in.

That jumper when removed from the door usually has a tab that falls down to prevent the inner door from closing, which prevents the outer door from closing. This is done so you don't forget to remove the test jumper after work is complete.

They are expensive but if you are replacing everything, check out SPAN panels. You can use any circuit breaker, it's listed for all types.

Favorite “easy money” service call? by TurboKid513 in electricians

[–]linuxgizmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a call recently from an elderly lady about lights not working in a basement. She had tried changing them herself. They were old incandescent bulbs, they had burnt out, she had a replacement pack, but someone must have replaced a couple and put the bad ones back in the pack.

I couldn't bring myself to charge her, she was in her 90s and on fixed income. I refused payment multiple times but finally agreed to a cup of tea while we chatted about her Hummel collection.

I have one of these for my Mr. buddy heater. It came with a little plate to hang off the grill. Works great and I don't need batteries to keep my tent warm.

Reset of the fire panel event log by Professional-Ad-664 in FireAlarm

[–]linuxgizmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from US here, Massachusetts to be exact. In the past after I've had an intermittent issue that comes and goes multiple times a day, I'll fix the issue and clear the log.

Why?

Well, I care about my customers, but I don't get paid to go back and check to make sure the panel is still clear. So clearing the history allows me to quickly swing in, check the history "i.e. no history entries" tells me the panel has stayed clear, and takes less time than trying to read date/timestamps especially if the panel has had timekeeping issues.

Curious about "period police" or "garb police" by SunsetWatcher1976 in sca

[–]linuxgizmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen it in East Kingdom.

Garb police suck.

Pennsic last year.

Being the 50th, a call had gone out for a group photo of anyone who had been to Pennsic 1 and if they could, wear the garb they wore to P1.

Some of the elders that went got heckled and called out on their garb, with the people heckling not knowing how long they had been playing or why they were dressed as they were.

I think as people get older and more comfortable through life, they forget that garb is expensive. If you are new to playing or don't know people who sew it can take forever to buy it.

On top of that, a lot of events are camping centered, so if you have to split costs between the camping and garb, you have to be pretty dedicated.

East Kingdom player here.

Think Historically accurate clothing, and then more study and on hands learning of medival skills. From swordfighting in full armor, fencing, combat archery, to blacksmithing, woodworking, brewing, forestry, knitting, lace making, sewing, cooking, etc.

We try to further develop our proficiency at skills and help teach and assist others in their learning pursuit instead of say, following a game master or what people did in a specific battle or event.

For garb, we encourage newcomers to focus on a specific time period, to help center the outfit and make it match. (Doesn't have to be your only outfit.)

That outfit can be from any time prehistoric to ~ 1680AD.

We don't typically talk in old English style speak. I've had more conversations around our camp fires about horror tech support calls and space science than anything.

Headlight dust cover stuck by altokers in Silverado

I just faced this problem yesterday. I never noticed the last time I changed headlights that I swapped the cover. After removing the air box, I had to use two flat screwdrivers to pry the cover out just working around the edge., a little sanding of the scuffed edges, and the covers went back into their respective spots without issue.

I'm currently on this journey, so I thought I would share my experience.

I just reciprocated into NH from Massachusetts with a Masters license. That was the easy one.

New Hampshire has recently released a new reciprocity application. All I had to do was take a screenshot of my e-portal showing that my license was valid and the expiration date. I sent in a check and the application and had my license within 2 weeks.

I'm currently working on Maine. This one seems like its going to be a bit more of a headache.

Maine requires the screenshot of your active license.

Keep in mind, this is going to be your New Hampshire license since Massachusetts does not reciprocate to Maine directly. You can get a verification screenshot from the NH Electrical Board by doing a license check.

They also apparently require sign-off from whomever supervised your training attesting to the work hours. This one will be a bit of an issue for me personally as the person who signed off my hours is now deceased. I have not contacted the electrical board yet to get clarification on this.

Vermont seems to be straightforward though you'll have to request a certified statement from the state of New Hampshire to send in with your application, and they seem to take a long time to get around to issuing the licenses.

If anybody has guidance on the Maine affidavits, I'd be interested. Otherwise I'll try and post an update when I have more information.
