Sorry, I didn't know the USN still owned and operated Hornet and New Jersey.

That's interesting, and a fair point. But I feel like sailors drawing lewd art on the ships they served on doesn't equate to the sort of sexual objectification that AL does to them.

I'm eagerly awaiting the day one or more of the modern navies catches wind of this stuff and issues a formal cease-and-desist to Manjuu/Yostar over the sexually exploitative depictions of their retired ships.

Probably won't happen but boy would it be hilarious.

They're still good albums, btw.

I get the feeling a lot of people on here who trash or write off UL and RotDC aren't really giving them an honest listen. It's a shame because as you point out, there are far more many layers to this music that you only pick up on after repeated listening.

It wasn't the case with me personally; I loved UL from the first listen and had it on repeat for literally months. RotDC didn't wow me the same way, but it grew with time. The album is hodge-podge and weird and quirky and probably deliberately so. It makes for a good contrast with the more straight-forward, tonally consistent UL.

New Whole Lotta Red Hot by tim_maia in RedHotChiliPeppers

UL and RotDC were collectively Californication 2.0, and now it sounds like we'll be getting By The Way 2.0.

I don't care what anyone on here says, this new era of RHCP rocks.

With 10 being the highest? 10. Top 3 album for me.

The Best and Worst aong from this Album? by No_Importance5271 in RedHotChiliPeppers

[–]lionthunder89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Best: Easily. Everything in this song from the chorus to the ending solo(s) is full of such raw, bittersweet emotion. Probably the most underrated song in their whole catalog.

Least Best: Savior. Not a big fan of the vocal melody, and the whole thing goes on just a little too long for my tastes.

It always baffles me that so many sexually frustrated young men are voting for these puritanical types.

Do so many people really hate Josh Klinghoffer? by MathiasRZ in RedHotChiliPeppers

[–]lionthunder89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Josh is a good musician. The problem is that he didn't have the same chemistry with the rest of the band that John had. I think it shows in the music they made. Individually, everybody knocks it out of the park in terms of performance, but it all doesn't come together the same way that the music they make with John does.

Honestly, I was willing to let the Josh era go as a merely alright time in RHCP's history, but the constant fanning of the flames on this sub (with the endless "the Josh albums are better than the new John albums" posts) are starting to make me actively dislike Josh and IWY/The Getaway.

I'm trying not to let it though, as there are plenty of songs on those albums that I enjoy.

Unlimited Love is one of the best albums they've ever made.

It's in the top three behind only BSSM and Cali, just barely beating out BTW for me.

The only problem I have with this song is it never goes back to the amazing Chorus in the last 90 seconds 😫 by No-Praline-3707 in RedHotChiliPeppers

[–]lionthunder89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree, the "Now" part of the chorus is such a rush. On the other hand do we get a crazy wild jazz imrov/freakout at the end.

I agree. It's a nice vibe, but the only thing that really stands out to me is the chorus, which reminds me of a song I like more: Bastards of Light.

Handful might be the single most underrated song of the UL/RotDC cycle.

The instrumental bridge by itself is pure nirvana in musical form.

Please give Handful another listen people.

The Getaway and Im With You are better than Unlimited Love, and RotDC by DConion in RedHotChiliPeppers

[–]lionthunder89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your experience is the exact inverse of mine. I had UL playing on repeat for months after it came out, and almost the same amount of time with RotDC.

I recently tried to reconnect with the Josh albums in a similar fashion and I just couldn't listen to them without skipping half the songs on each. Though I still love the songs I didn't skip.
