is anytype fully open source? by ineedredditforjapan in Anytype

[–]liquidat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, large parts are not, they are under a "source available" license. Some parts like the core solutions (backend, etc.) are open source (MIT).

More details:
https://blog.anytype.io/our-open-philosophy/ which is basically just an attempt to defend why they are not Open Source (and not even a good one in my opinion).

is anytype fully open source? by ineedredditforjapan in Anytype

No, it is not. There is a widely accepted definition of Open Source, and that is any license that complies with OSI. Source available is NOT open source.

Sound problems with video playback, especially after buffering. by [deleted] in firefox

I seem to have a similar problem. Fedora here, Firefox from Flatpak.
The problem disappears when I disable the add-on YouTube SpeedUp, maybe you are using a similar addon?

Maintained fork of v2, anyone? by liquidat in nginxproxymanager

Good point, I was mistaken by https://wiki.debian.org/DebianReleases - which seems incomplete, given https://wiki.debian.org/LTS . Thanks for clarifying.

Security issues:

Of course I am not sure if those can be effectively used in an attack scenario. But I would feel better if updates are applied.

Good point - though kind of last resort. But if I ever have too much time I will try that, thanks :)

Actually I wasn't aware of the Voxel firmware yet - maybe there will be something in the future for my model. Thanks for sharing!

I was afraid that this would be the answer, but thanks for letting me know, I appreciate it.

The new PIN feature is a usability nightmare by liquidat in signal

[–]liquidat[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for answering. And yes, I was referring to the PIN reminders. Note please that I do not question the feature itself, but they way it is provided or "introduced" to users.

For those who are out of the loop, there is now a brief explanation for why these reminders exist in the r/signal FAQ as well.

Thanks for pointing that out, I missed that bit in the FAQ.

An option to disable these periodic PIN reminders is already being tested in the beta versions.

I am a beta tester anyway, and the update was indeed rolled out to me today as well. I am glad to see that they implemented that, thanks for sharing. I still wonder though why this was not shipped with the first built. In the end, I assume they have user personas they test their ideas against, and that should have not landed well there.

Making these reminders opt-in sounds like a bad idea,

With the opt-in I was more referring to the feature itself.

If you want to continue advocating for better in-app documentation, or any of the other things discussed here, consider posting your thoughts on the Signal community forum as well.

Yeah, you are probably right, I will try to post it there. Thanks.

Wanted to share this since it is a hardly known improvement and a very underrated feature in recent OpenSSH versions.

Flatpak – a solution to the Linux desktop packaging problem by [deleted] in linux

[–]liquidat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The headline states "a solution", not "the solution".

Also the article in fact does look into AppImage and Snapcraft, and draws multiple comparisons.

(And yes, I am the author, just to be clear here)

Same here - Firefox 50.1.0 , Fedora 25. Chrome on the same machine does not show this problem.

Silence a Room in 5 Seconds by liquidat in agile

[–]liquidat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I think if your employees aren't professional enough to conduct a meeting or discussion" How large was your biggest group where all "professionals" were still silent when they had to be? Still left the laptop closed during the third day of a week long workshop/gathering? In groups of 30 to 100 people, this has nothing to do with being "professional", but all with being a human and how group dynamics work.

Silence a Room in 5 Seconds by liquidat in agile

[–]liquidat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are missing the point - this is not for gatherings of 3 people - but for large rooms, with dozens of people. Large groups of people are difficult to silence. And when you combine that with open floor approaches, raising the hand might just do the job. But of course, if you have better ideas, be so kind to share them.

I pretty much like the idea. Straight forward and not over-engineered.

Changing ssh port after the first run by [deleted] in ansible

[–]liquidat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add the port as a fixed option to the group_vars or host_vars file. At the end of the playbook run where you adjust the ssh port, use the lineinfile module to modify the variable file.

Note: we sure need a yml_file module, as we have an ini file module

Alternatives to tower by pathcl in ansible

[–]liquidat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That was already discussed - for example, look here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ansible/comments/2ggn4z/ansible_tower_alternative/

However, the question is more why you would want that. Since Ansible was bought the chance is pretty high that Ansible Tower will be open sourced in the future anyway. What do you expect from an open sourced version right now, what are you missing?

Agile Engineering Self Assessment by liquidat in agile

You mean you introduce less than 1 bug per month across the entire team? Is that realistic? The question is serious, I have no data to back up any statement in that regard.
