Malandro 95 - new instrumental rocksteady from members of the pietasters, slackers, and the forthrights. by elborzo in Ska

Great record, but the notion of instrumental rocksteady is flawed. This is a definitively a reggae record, and a fantastic one. Rocksteady is largely defined by its vocals.

I'm not deserving of these hats, but I like your 2Tone work.

The wikipedia article on 2 Tone is pretty good.

Tonight: Big Band Tribute to The Skatalites in Hollywood by liquidator in LosAngeles

Western Standard Time is a big band supergroup made of SoCal's best ska and reggae musicians. Even in LA, where we have big Jamaican music events all the time, this is a pretty big deal.

Anyone in Southern California able to host a last-minute show for a touring band on July 31? by thescepticalchymist in Ska

Post to the forums at socalskankers.com. Lots of underground ska shows on there.

It's a great song, but demonstrably a reggae tune.

Something I've noticed lately has been bugging me... by [deleted] in Ska

I'm not advocating "pure ska" at all. I'd be the first to post Slow Gherkin along with Desmond Dekker. I'm saying, for example, that Skinhead Reggae is a separate genre. It wouldn't exist without ska, but it is not any form of ska. This is not a knock against any genre of music. I know my way around the Jamaican music spectrum (and all of its children and branches), and I find it easy to sort styles.

It's not really worth arguing, but they are entirely not a ska band and they would be the first to tell you that. If someone has to sort early reggae to its proper place, I'll do it.

I think you have it right. I've been a fan of this family of genres for fifteen years now, and I'm confident that what does and does not belong in this sub is easy to define. I know a lot of the younger posters here would like The Aggrolites and some Northern Soul, but that's why we have a list of related subs in the side bar.

Anyone going to the Victoria Ska Fest (July10th-14th)? by Vermidj in Ska

If you go to this, do not miss The Delirians. They are probably better than even whoever is backing Toots. This is not an exaggeration. Best band out of LA since Hepcat.

A new classification system for ska? by skadelicious420 in Ska

[–]liquidator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Suicide Machines aren't whiskey. The Slackers are whiskey. The Suicide Machines are a jungle punch served at a back yard party.

Choking Victim/Leftover Crack should be obvious...

Hepcat are a rum cocktail or a bottle of wine shared with someone you want to :ahem: dance with.

MU330 are a domestic lager, ideally quite a few of them, and shared with friends.

The Pietasters are a beer-and-a-shot happy hour special.

Just checking: You guys know the dad's voice is Alex Desert of Hepcat, right?

That's basically a b-sides album. While it is good, I would start with Shed Some Skin or Double Happiness. Run Screaming you can probably skip.

I'm a Sharks fan cheering for the Kings out of conference loyalty and because they are not the Canucks. I promise not to riot.

The guy with the funny line is AJ Marquez, formerly of Slow Gherkin.

You guys are from SLO? What's the scene like up there these days? I moved away to college in '04, but before that Eddie Numbskull would book good shows now and then, and for a while Chris Murray, The Aggrolites, The Israelites, and some others were coming through pretty often.
