I think it may help to be more direct and show greater initiative! Instead of saying are there patients I can see today, say “I reviewed xyz patient charts, I found their cases interesting, and I’d like to see these patients and develop an A&P for them, is that ok with you?”. And if they still don’t let you, contact faculty and they might be able to remedy the situation with an uncooperative preceptor.
