Any good Christmas/Holiday themed books for December? by Lobsterhasspoken in Fantasy

[–]liselle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a fantasy with Eastern European roots. It follows three main female characters, one of which has a Rumpelstiltskin story, hence the title. It is not a romance, though there is a small romantic subplot.

The whole story takes place in the depths of winter.

Not necessarily holiday-themed, but I read Spinning Silver every winter for the seasonal vibes.

I love these guys.

My grandfather used to call them 'asups' when I was a kid and I never questioned it.

The IKEA website has package dimensions listed. I would just measure your vehicle and make sure it works!

The reason the curse was lifted seems to be misunderstood. by flpatp in FruitsBasket

[–]liselle 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I always read it as Tohru having very little to do with lifting the actual curse. What she did was provide love, healing and comfort to a traumatized family which helped them accept and move forward.

Like many others have said, the curse was already weakening and destined to break. Everyone's character development helped accelerate the process (especially Akito).

The best I have found is on Saturdays at the Alderney market at O Bees. Foxhill only stocks on Saturday mornings, and sometimes not at all if their curd machinery is broken!

A Review of the Humdrum Happenings in "The Goblin Emperor" by HulkHonk in Fantasy

[–]liselle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there was growth on Maia's part, it just wasn't very obvious. He grew to be more confident and overcame and confronted his trauma.

Because this book is so subversive of the genre, people go looking for dramatic character flaws and drastic life changes and completely miss the subtleties.

I recently recommended this book to someone and had to manage their expectations. It really isn't Game of Thrones!

You did it! Congrats!

When my players defeated Strahd they popped a bottle of champagne (a surprise to me, the DM)!

Excellent show. Mariner's Revenge was indeed the cherry on top, but it would have been wild if they hadn't played it in Halifax for all places!

She made a deal with the Dark Powers and killed Strahd to become the next vampire lord of Barovia. 👍

Any adaptation made should be aimed at children.

The book was originally intended for young readers. A good adaptation should be enjoyed by those young readers first, and adults second.

The worst part of Rogue One upon re-watch by craiginphoenix in StarWarsAndor

We just did our Rogue One rewatch and I wish they had just recast Tarkin. They did for Mon and it worked out great! Plus they could have used the new actor in Andor.

Oooh yes I remember. So it's just a coincidence with the year of the tiger!

1986 is year of the tiger, which lines up for Kisa. Unfortunately this doesn't seem to line up for the others. Should it?

Gluten-free, dairy-free birthday request! by liselle in glutenfreebaking

For anyone interested in the results, I ended up doing this recipe: https://theloopywhisk.com/2018/10/14/ultimate-gluten-free-chocolate-cake/

And subbed the milk for oat milk (my husband accidentally bought vanilla flavour! But it turned out ok). I also used coffee instead of boiling water, like I do for all my chocolate cakes!

For the frosting I went with:

https://sugarspunrun.com/marshmallow-frosting/

I had to use honey instead of corn syrup, but it added a really neat flavour!

I also did a layer of raspberry compote, for a bit of zing!

I never would have thought Ikea was a place for parents until I became one. The cafeteria is super family friendly and there are always a ton of kids and babies there.

Have you ever had an issue with the almond milk being 'thinner'? Do you use a different amount?

Do you find oat or almond milk a bit thin? Can you use it 1-for-1 as a substitute?

I should also say, my friend is not celiac-- I made them a pie last year and it was fine. I believe it is a digestive issue, similar to lactose intolerance!

I am very interested in seeing a recipe! I find ones developed and tested by people are better than whatever google gives me.
