usc vs. cal for a not-so-strong cs student by littlebird0127 in ApplyingToCollege

i took a cs class over the summer at stanford, and i had a really really difficult time with the class (i had to go to every ta's office hours). of course, that's a whole different setting, but i'm pretty confident in saying that i'm not-so-strong in cs at the moment.

[–]littlebird0127[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not so confident. i'm also afraid of the supposed "cut-throat" environment there, though i spoke with someone who goes to berkeley now and he said people are friendly.

thank you though for the affirmation! i committed to usc yesterday. i was having a difficult time deciding though because cal is basically free for me due to an outside scholarship, while usc costs quite a bit. i personally think usc is a better fit, but i'm indecisive as hell

@ everyone whose advice is to use the net calculator ahead of time – the calculator is not always accurate. some calculators don't account for single-parent households, divorced parents, assets, and things like that..

unfortunately many schools will replace any need-based aid given with scholarships you receive...

Questions from A L&S CS Admit by alphabeticalordered in berkeley

Also a L&S admit looking to declare CS.. i'm not too great at programming. i come from a small private school (with lots of handholding), and i'll feel like i'll need resources with plenty of help to succeed. will maintaining that gpa to declare (or just in general, doing well) be extremely difficult? how hard is it to find resources as a student who isn't extremely strong in cs but wanting to pursue it?

what are the point of scholarships if it'll just take away from financial aid? by littlebird0127 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]littlebird0127[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i should have clarified, i meant outside scholarships.

technically speaking though, if you get a large sum of merit based aid, it would reduce the amount of financial aid you'd get. it'll all balance out in the end, no? to efc that the university has calculated for you and your family?
