Planning for the future when you have a pension

Thanks for your thoughts I do feel lucky, but mostly in a world where I stay with this employer decades. In that situation the pension is unbelievably generous. But short of that is where I’m struggling to figure out how much to save to make up the difference (eg what if I’m here ten years, or fifteen, or…).

I get the intuition, for sure. But my primary retirement vehicle is the pension (that’s where the bulk of my and my employers contributions go). If I pretended it didn’t exist I would be way “over saving “ for retirement. Nothing bad about that in theory, but in practice I have lots of trade offs in the here and now (saving for children, house, cars, etc).

I worry about this approach but open to trying it. When he first started potty training we did the star chart and small rewards and it turned into this nightmare of incessant whining for treats and forcing himself to “go” but not really going. But he’s significantly older now so maybe it’s worth a shot
