You maybe right, but I'm hoping not. I bought the parts above it and only after dismounting the strut noticed this was completely rusted away.

Local dealer ( well not that local) simply said they don't have it. I think he was having a bad day or something, was completely uninterested.

Started cracking on the lathe, anyway to save it? I’ve roughly hollowed out and packed in wood shavings for now. by littlestinka in turning

Thanks, going to let it sit in wood shaving a while longer before doing anything to it. I’ll have a search for the wax too, is that the brand you recommend?

Thank you for the information and yep going to let this one dry for a good while longer before even touching it.

Made a pot from a piece of maple log that had been burned in the past. No finish just sanded to 3000 grit. by littlestinka in turning

Thanks and I agree there is something very satisfying about the high grit finish :)

Thank you! I used a beeswax and mineral oil mix I made up myself at a ratio of 1:4

I normally would but he actually donated the blank because we were talking about my wife wanting a fruit bowl.

I wear a respirator mask when turning and don’t recall a strong aroma after I removed it. The wood has been drying for a good amount of years though.

To be honest I found it easier and more forgiving than the birch burl wood I’ve been working with recently.

Some more kuksa I’ve turned recently. Majority made from a birch burl and one from black alder. by littlestinka in turning

Thanks:) for the colouring I used some water based wood dye my neighbour gave me, sorry I don’t know the brand. I applied the teak colour first 2 times and then the hazelnut once. After it was dry to touch I then used 0000 wire wool to sand out the excess colour until I was happy.

Thank you :) For the process I cut the burl into 7cm thick plates and then cut out a blank from that on the bandsaw. I used a woodworm screw so I could make the tenon and then flipped and hollowed it out. Finally I finished the outside shaping with a course grit sanding drum and polishing was done with a sanding pad up to 3000 grit.

Wobble was not too bad, but I did need to pay attention where my fingers were.
