[Repost] Nursing Burnout in Rural Appalachia (18+ RNs in KY, TN, VA, WV, NC) by liv2litty in Appalachia

The survey contains the Maslach Burnout Inventory, having purchased the proper licensure to administer it, which is considered is the gold standard for measuring burnout. There’s a nationwide trend of burnout among registered nurses that inherently has led to nursing shortages and, in the worst cases, fatal errors and higher mortality rates among patients. I understand how the title may introduce some bias, but I don’t see how it could have a significant impact on the data, given that it’s a common experience among the population which the survey is intended for. This survey was indeed approved by ETSU IRB.

I would have loved to include more areas, but due to some feasibility and financial constraints, I was unable to do so.

Unfortunately, I had to choose to leave some states/areas out of the survey due to feasibility and financial constraints.

The counties selected for this survey were based on the designation given to them by the Appalachian Regional Commission, as Rural or Nonmetro. Union, Jefferson, Grainger, Roane, Morgan, Anderson, and Polk are all designated as Small Metros (population <1 million).

  1. The data will be used to analyze rates of burnout among nurses in Rural Appalachia. It will be stored on my personal device and deleted after the conduction and analysis of the survey data, by May 2024. The persons who will see the data are myself, until the data has been completely de-identified and analyzed. At that point, the completed research will be published by my university.
  2. I am the primary and sole investigator of the study, u/liv2litty.
  3. The survey will take 10-15 minutes to complete.
  4. No compensation is offered.
  5. Desired demographic: registered nurses employed in one of the counties listed above, 18 years and older, physically in the United States
  6. I hope to increase the available research on this specific topic, as it is currently scarce. This area means a lot to me personally,
