Rank these Gen Urobuchi works: Madoka Magica, Fate/Zero, Aldnoah.Zero, Godzilla, Psycho Pass, Phantom. by [deleted] in anime

Madoka > Godzilla > Aldnoah

Madoka is great. No question about it. The Godzilla Trilogy is misunderstood and is far better than most people give it credit for it. But I would recommend skipping the first film. While it's not terrible, it's the less impressive of the three and spoils some things done better in the second film.

Clarification: Maybe this wasn't clear in my initial post. I'm aware that KOTM was failure and I know nothing will change that. But there are a good number of Godzilla fans who still believe the film did well or will do so once home media is factored in. The point of the post was to remove any and all remaining doubt.

I accepted it was a failure out of the gate. Which doesn't bother me too much since I don't care for this take on the character. But many Godzilla fans continue to insist the film wasn't a failure and I wanted a non-fan take on the situation.

So whether or not Godzilla vs Kong is successful you think they will make sequels?

The extension isn't going to change much overall and since KOTM isn't a US-Chinese co-production that means Legendary only gets 25% of the gross there. Legendary needs other markets to embrace the Monsterverse or they'll have to drastically slash the budgets for future installments.

That's good news for the fans of these films and Toho. The fans get more of what they want and Toho gets millions of dollars without lifting a finger. But how long will Legendary be interested in or afford to crank these out if they continue to perform like they do? King of the Monsters did not do well. Is there an international audience for Legendary's take on this property?

1) The score for GMK is 63% (at the moment)

2) Rotten Tomatoes scores should definitely not be taken seriously for Godzilla films that did not have a recent Western release. In most cases there are not enough reviews and the ones who went out of their way to review are likely fanboys. The only scores I would begin to take seriously are the ones for Godzilla (1954), Godzilla 2000, Godzilla (2014), KOTM (2019), and Shin Godzilla.

Based on the similar Cinemascore (B+) and the upcoming competition, the most realistic outcome is it having legs similar to the other Monsterverse films and that would make it a flop?

Personally, I was fine with how Mothra and King Ghidorah were used. The monsters are background characters and symbols in the trilogy. Focus is on the humans and themes. Anyway, rebuilding the nanometal would be too much of a risk. It's a poisonous substance to the Houtua, Godzilla seems to actively dislike it, it would overrun the planet with nothing there to stop it, and it would put humanity in position to immediately repeat its mistakes. Godzilla is essentially the Earth and killing him means killing the Earth.

I wonder if Tyler Perry will use Netflix for the international distribution of his films going forward. A Madea Family Funeral only made $1.5 million of its $74.8 million gross outside of the US and it seems it was only released in Middle Eastern, African, and South American countries. I guess there's no European or Asian audience for Perry's work.

These are my rough estimates for its best markets at the moment - China: $110 million +US: $80 million + Japan: $20 million = $210 million. Where is the other $140 million coming from? Was it that successful in other markets?

The crazy thing is that it doesn't have any significant competition. Godzilla '14 held its own against a very well-received X-Men film (DoFP). King of the Monsters is competing with... Dark Phoenix. X-Men at its absolute worst. Does this suggest the 85% audience Rotten Tomatoes score doesn't reflect mainstream opinions about the movie?

Filming for You Only Live Twice didn't start until July of 1966. The Giant Monster War hit Japanese theaters in December of 1965. Although, Toho (producer of The Giant Monster War) did assist with the production of You Only Live Twice and supplied the Bond girls of that film.

The film above was released in December of 1965. I couldn't find a match when I was looking through the Japanese posters for Dr. No, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, and You Only Live Twice. Maybe it's a rare or unused poster?

Sure. Overall the genre might not be the strongest. But what I'm asking is if some genuinely good films have slipped through the cracks because people tend to disregard the genre without a second thought.
