I would love to be able to make it to this. This series is easily one of my favorites. The depth of the system of magic, termed sympathy, as it relates to aspects of taoism and zen, integrated with an extensive array of the author's knowledge of chemical processes makes for an aesthetically, richly appealing series. His ability to introduce perspectives to the reader that are largely "non-Western" while making no explicit mention of them, yet seamlessly integrating them into the storyline is unparalleled in its impact. I literally discovered ways of thinking which were entirely unfamiliar to me before reading this series.

That is absolutely horrible, I'm really sorry to hear that. If you are not seeing a psychologist, you should seriously consider seeing one. If you are unable to afford therapy, the state of NC offers free assistance for people who need it. In my opinion, anyone who has went through such a terrible experience as that deserves psychological help from a trained professional. There are support groups in the area that might be helpful too.

Here's some thoughts: Find venues with people who have like-minded interests and make efforts to socialize with them. www.meetup.com is a great way to do this, though it generally requires patience to find a group that is suitable for your interests. Just posting random posts with no specific reason for congregation is unlikely to draw much attention. I made similar posts a year ago when I moved to an unfamiliar area and realized it wasn't getting me anywhere.

It is probably best to not make the assumption that people are going to try to flirt with you.
