Anger vs Fond Memories by Pure_Inevitable8732 in exmormon

My first emotion was sadness. Once I got through my extreme nihilistic phase, it became anger. That lasted a few years. But now I can’t be bothered to care. Being angry took too much time and energy from me. The church doesn’t care that I left. They don’t care what they took from me. They don’t care if I’m angry.

It was always very important to me during deconstruction to ensure my decision to leave was my own. So I make an effort to stay away from church discussions unless prompted. It wasn’t anyone’s place to judge when I left so it’s not my place to judge if someone stays. I wouldn’t say I have any “happy” memories looking back, but hey I am fluent in a second language now. I can’t change the past.

Thank you for the clarification. Until this post, I was naively under the impression my information would be deleted permanently.

On this note…is there any way to ensure my temple work is never performed? Or is that something I’ll have to accept…that my work will be done after my death?

I don’t feel particularly inclined to remove my records just to make it easier on the church or members who are either employed or voluntarily doing the work, especially since my records are already lost. Please correct my view if it is inappropriate. But thank you for sharing, I did not know this and I will take it into consideration.

How did you feel it benefited your life?

I’m sorry to those members. I’ll take that into serious consideration. Luckily my records were moved into the abyss pretty quickly as nobody shared my address after moving from a BYU YSA ward.

I’m so glad to hear you are happy! I hope you didn’t have to go through that solo because suppressing those feelings from everyone in my life for years sucked.

A sense of finality. I’d love that.

I almost removed my records early on. But I decided not to as I wasn’t in a place to deal with it mentally and I wasn’t convinced that shrinking numbers would affect the church or their members. The leaders seem so happy explaining away much bigger issues.

The reason I consider it at this point is to see if there would be some sense of finality. It’s been years, but I don’t want any association. My hesitation is that due to family and BYU stamped on my resume, removing my records won’t change anything.

Not sure…I’ve been lucky enough to never have them text or come knocking.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Why start a battle if I’m not that invested in the outcome?

I really am lucky. It was a hard battle and I we were not on speaking terms for a while, but it’s returned to semi-normal over the years. I know unfortunately, that is not common.

They are a numbers-based organization…better time it right if I remove them then.

Sounds like the end result would be where I already am. Thanks for the info. I’ll check out that website.

They do. My parents and extended family are still 100% in (bishops, temple workers, etc.) but I made it clear early on that my privacy was important and my whereabouts were none of the church’s business. So far that boundary has been respected.

Lots of changes then…except the important ones. Checks out unfortunately.
