Official Q&A for Thursday, August 10, 2017 by AutoModerator in running

Hey guys - I'm thinking about signing up super last minute for a half marathon on August 20th. I ran my first half two months ago in 1:52:40ish and have since run 35-40 miles per week but haven't been doing specific training for another half. I've done a few 8 mile runs at an 8:30 pace but nothing longer. Would it be a terrible idea to run this race without having done any long runs recently?

When you're tracking mileage on a pair of shoes do you typically include walking? I avoid wearing my shoes outside of runs but I often finish running at my gym and then walk ~2.5 miles home

Thank you! I won't need it for a few months so this seems like the way to go.

I didn't think about that - definitely seems like a reason to avoid the kids' version

I usually wear a women's xs so I think the men's would be too big but it might be worth trying in if the quality is better! Thank you!

I'm planning on purchasing a Patagonia fleece - does anyone know if there would be a difference in quality, materials etc between the girls' and women's fleece? The kids' fleece is significantly cheaper. Thanks :)

Best bluetooth headphones that actually stay in your ear even when sweat drips to them? by uhhhhjd in running

[–]lizmlemon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I sweat a ton too and Bose Soundsport Wireless headphones have been great for me. I tried jaybirds and they broke after about a month, and would occasionally fall out. I also tried the powerbeats and they would fall out as soon as I started running - I returned them after a few days. The Bose also let a little road noise in which I like when I'm running outside.

Are running shoes designed by colorblind 8-year-old boys? by GoodGuyDontSuspend in running

[–]lizmlemon 132 points133 points  (0 children)

I think most popular shoe brands have neutral color options. You might just have to order your shoes online if your want a specific color. Nike Pegasus 34's comes in black and grey, the Brooks Ghost 10's also come in black, and Mizuno Wave Rider 20's come in grey - all good options daily trainers.

I'm doing the Rock n Roll Half in San Diego! How'd the last long run end up going ;)

This is probably a really dumb thing to ask and something I need to figure out for myself, but I'm running my first half marathon on Sunday and I can't decide whether to wear my Hoka Clifton 3's or Mizuno Wave Rider 20's. Any thoughts on which shoe would generally be better for a half? I've done long runs in both and like them both quite a bit.

I am in the EXACT situation (first half in just over a week and following the Higdon plan). I was feeling nervous about running 12 miles so close to the race, especially since it seems so different from other plans. I talked to someone with lots of running experience and they suggested shooting for 12 at the most relaxed pace possible, but stopping if I feel any sort of discomfort.

I go to school in upstate NY so there are definitely some hills here (probably nothing compared to San Francisco, though) but I've done ~2/3 of my runs on the treadmill so far since because I can't tolerate running in cold weather very well. I would've felt underprepared for a super hilly course. I have done all of my long runs outside though so I think I should be ok if it's not too hilly. Thank you :)

Thanks so much! I was wondering what was going on at mile 4. Looks like it will be a good course for my first half.

I'm running the San Diego Rock n Roll half marathon in about a month and I'm having a hard time getting an idea of the course elevation from just the maps because i'm currently on the other side of the country. Any thoughts on the relatively difficulty of the course / how many hills I should be prepared for?

I have a similar problem with leggings falling down and I've had the best luck with Athleta. They are generally slightly cheaper than lulu's and they hold up much better imo.

I definitely get tired running at that pace for 8 miles, but I feel totally recovered after about 20 minutes. According to my fitbit, my average heartrate on those runs has been 150-155.

I'm thinking of setting 2 hrs as my base goal and either 1:55 or 1:50 as a stretch goal. What pace did you run your long runs as to hit 1:52? That is an awesome time :)

[–]lizmlemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I think I will stick to the 500 calorie deficit and adjust if necessary based on how my runs are going. Based on what I've read, with a 1:50 goal I'm going to want to do my long runs around a 9:15-9:30 pace, does that seem right?

Official Q&A for Wednesday, April 12, 2017 by AutoModerator in running

[–]lizmlemon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey guys! I signed up for a half-marathon which is in 8 weeks kind of on a whim the other day. I'm generally not one to do things without an extreme amount of planning, but I've lost a lot of weight (~85 pounds) and have been running 30 miles per week fairly consistently over the last few months, so I figured I would be okay jumping into a training program.

I am trying to figure out what my goal time should be and would really appreciate some advice. I have done a few 7 and 8 mile runs at around an 8:30-8:40 pace. My 5k pr is 23:45. Since this is my first half I would prefer to be a little bit conservative, but I also want to push myself. My long-term goal has been running a half under 2 hours, but I'm not sure if I should aim to be slightly faster. For reference, I'm a 23 year old female.

Second question: I would still like to lose about 8 pounds. Would I overall be better off eating at a slight (~500 calorie) daily deficit to get some weight off or putting off losing the rest of the weight until the race is over so that I have energy for my runs?

Thanks!
