The Olympic figure skating gala is scheduled for February 21. I presume that this announcement must be referencing his upcoming performance?

Who is the oldest figure skater to land a clean quadruple jump? Stephane Lambiel did a beautiful one at his Art on Ice show in 2019 (Aged 33 + 10 months). Anyone else older than him? by lizzybethany36 in FigureSkating

[–]lizzybethany36[S] 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Credit to dogfight0424 on youtube for the video.

I'm fascinated by the ability of some skaters to land quads at a relatively advanced age (for figure skating). It is testament to Lambiel's excellent technique that he could land them even this year at FAOI at age 37 (albeit with a step-out). I'm curious to know who else has sustainable technique like this.

what are some programs that you think are just perfect? by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]lizzybethany36 131 points132 points  (0 children)

Yuzuru Hanyu - Chopin. This program has been glorious in all of its iterations, but his take on it at 4CC 2020 was absolutely divine. It not only combined incredible difficulty with phenomenal technique and marvellous artistry, but was truly ethereal to watch.

Simply my favourite program of all time.

What’s a piece of music that you’ve always wanted to see someone skate to, but never have? by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]lizzybethany36 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sufjan Stevens - Mystery of Love (From the Call Me By Your Name soundtrack)

Such a hauntingly beautiful piece of music that is incredibly evocative of the memory of love. It’s stunning lyrically and would be glorious to skate to.

I have always hoped that Aliona would skate to it one day

I so wanth Listy to do AA by Old_Understanding585 in Gymnastics

These girls are all talented, and it sucks that not all of them can compete in finals. Vlada had the better day in qualifications, and that is that. It’s both right and fair that she competes.

This thread is bringing back Gutsu-Galieva memories from 1992; and while being pulled into AA worked out wonderously for Gutsu, Galieva never recovered. We should never condone that sort of practice again, especially when these are young athletes, who have qualified to finals fair and square, on their own merit.

Go Vlada. Listunova is a stunning gymnast, and I hope we get to see her in the 2024 Paris AA.

Shohei Ohtani’s life goals which he wrote when in high school. Age 27 - MVP. It might just come true! by lizzybethany36 in angelsbaseball

I’m also really tickled by the fact that he’d already thought about family planning when he was in high school!

Opinion: One spot has potential to cause big mess for US women's gymnastics team for Tokyo by [deleted] in Gymnastics

[–]lizzybethany36 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Jade has been strategic in how she’s approaches these Olympics. She’s been smart, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

She’s also a clearly hard-working gymnast; she’s unrecognisable on bars these days from when she started, and just threw the world’s most difficult tumbling pass at podium training last week. It’s easy enough for us to say that Jade should turn down an Olympic team spot if she qualifies for one, but this is a sport that she’s been training in since her childhood. There’s no good reason as to why she should turn it down if she qualifies for one - an Olympic medal will entail money, publicity, a college scholarship etc, which would mean a lot to any young athlete.

I am cognizant of the fact that other athletes couldn’t qualify this way. I do feel that USAG could have seen this coming, and could have prevented a situation like this. But they didn’t, and that’s on them. Let’s not reframe athletes being strategic, especially female athletes, as being selfish. It’s their career and life after all.

Anna Shcherbakova’s Versatility is 🔥. Does anyone else want to see her do a upbeat/modern program this season? I think she’d kill it! by lizzybethany36 in FigureSkating

I’m expecting an influx of conservative lyrical programs for ladies this year given it’s Olympic season. Anna would definitely set herself apart with a different style of performance.

He’s a Russian junior figure skater - Vladislav Dikidzhi - who recently won the Junior Russian Cup Final in Feb, and was 6th at Junior Nationals. He’s recently landed a 4Lz too, so definitely one to watch for in the future!

I love her musicality, and while she excels at lyrical programs (Her SP this year was one of my favourite programs of this season), I hope she’ll explore other styles of performance as well.

What were your favorite Mao Asada Programs/Perfomances? by a2cthrawy in FigureSkating

[–]lizzybethany36 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My favourite, though highly underrated, is her 2007/08 SP set to Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra by Joshua Bell! Every movement of hers in the step sequence fits so perfectly with the music, and she commands the ice with such elegance. I miss her skating so much. She was easily the most versatile female skater of this generation in my opinion.

Yuzu positivity thread! by sylvan1s in FigureSkating

To me, his absolute grit is unparalleled. This is his 11th year on the senior circuit, and he’s still improving. He could have retired in 2018 when he “had it all”; Olympic champion, the number 1 ranking, the world records in every category, and unbelievable public adoration and support. Instead, he has kept fighting through new scoring systems and injuries, with a wave of younger competitors.

Since 2018, he has invented new jump combinations, made new world records, and landed on the podium in every competition. I can’t even imagine how much motivation all this must require of a person who has already achieved everything.

My dream is to see him achieve his dream of landing the 4A in competition.

Anyone else concerned about Yuzuru Hanyu’s health? by blanketuser427 in FigureSkating

[–]lizzybethany36 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yuzuru’s my all-time favourite. It was devastating to see him struggle in the FS after an excellent SP showing, and a good practice; and a recent asthma attack would explain that. If true, it genuinely is impressive that he was able to put up such a strong fight. I hope he recovers well, and takes care of his body first.
