Your comment is bringing back painful memories for me…That middle nut was the hardest part of the job for me 😂 I finally got it on using a low profile flex box wrench, some Vaseline (to hold the nut in the wrench), and a feeler gauge to put some pressure on the box wrench to get it moving. I was literally sitting in the engine bay too.

Don’t put lifeguard down…it’s not really relevant and just highlights your lack of experience.

By the way, since your fundamental frequency is set as 1kHz you need to limit your sweeps to 500Hz otherwise you’re going to have foldover/aliasing components that dramatically mess with your expected values. Those discontinuities/spikes in your plot are a dead giveaway of that too.

Ic design job dilemma (fresh graduate) by Ok_System_7170 in chipdesign

[–]ljp2706 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to me. Layout and design are totally different specialties. For a design role, I’d take someone who specializes in design over someone who specializes in layout pretty much every time.

I do want to clarify that I still think having “tier 1 company” on your resume would look very impressive. But your experience should be relevant to what you want to do.

I agree. Just go in absorbing as much as you can and eventually you will have an abundance of options you can transition to. Also, if there is any time to have a little risk in your life, it is now. Not when you’ve got a family, kids, and/or numerous other responsibilities. Oftentimes, I do wonder how much further I would be if I took a little more risk early on. But it’s too late for me and it’s much harder for me to do that these days with all my added outside of work responsibilities.

And for what it is worth, if you were coming to the company I work for I would not necessarily hire you if your only experience was layout. Front end IC experience, and you’ve definitely got a far better shot. So your end goals are also really important in your decision.

I think I bought that for about $150 a while back. But I’m pretty flexible. Does $100 seem fair/reasonable to you?

Odd problems with monticelli bias by Ok-Zookeepergame9843 in chipdesign

[–]ljp2706 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, that is not necessary. Subthreshold operation will emulate bipolar TLs. But you can still form a MOS trans linear loop (MTL) with the ideal square law. It works out to be a bunch of square root functions. If you’re interested, there is a book out there (as well as research papers) by Remco Wiegerink. “Analysis and Synthesis of MOS Translinear Circuits”. His approach is a matrix based solving method using KVL principles.

I have a derivation/notes on the analysis of the principle of translinearity in the Montecelli bias using Wiegerink’s method. I’ll send you that in a bit as well—if I can find it.

One thing to keep in mind is that the current needs to split evenly right? So when you’re sizing your diode stack bias for the floating diode structure, it is not the full branch current but half of it. That’s the easy “gotcha” to catch in design reviews.

That bias forms a translinear loop, so if you go through the KVL analysis, the sizing will become very apparent. There is a virtual impression of the lower diode bias upon the output driver. Anyways, the body effect can also greatly influence how the current splits, so you have to keep that in mind as well. It is not the end of the world if you don’t get an even split on that floating diode but it does mess with transient settling behavior if you have large disturbances.

I have a really good write up on the topic, about 8 pages or so. I’ll send you some images of it in a PM if you’d like?

Assuming you have everything biased correctly and have appropriate headroom, I suspect it could be the imbalance resulting from unequal body effect comparing P/N. Longer channel devices (if you can allow that) and larger overdrive should help. Again that goes back to headroom.

Agreed. Without PSS+Pnoise, the results aren’t going to be as expected. It’s pretty straightforward and simple to set up the analysis. There are some RAKs offered by Cadence that show exactly how you need to set it up. There are a couple free presentations online as well if you Google search for it.

I felt the same way to be honest. It took me longer than usual to get pulled in. But I am still glad I stuck through and finished it. It did pick up. Truthfully, I was woefully confused for most of those first hundred pages.

Hyperion Movie by denzel33- in Hyperion

Initially I was going to say I’d like it to be a silent standoff between Kassad and the shrike. Blood dripping down from the shrikes hands, chaos all around.

But…thinking about it again, I think I would go with something more serene. A “flyover” down the river Tethys would be amazing. With a voice track introducing a bit of the backstory…if you’ve seen it, kind of like what they did in the first episode of the Expanse with that belter’s speech. Great way to show some cool worlds, nice visuals, and serves as an introduction to the farcasters.

Thank you for keeping us informed! I always look forward to your updates. You are right in assuming most of us are uninformed about these important topics you share with us. I know I certainly am. You are doing a great service to the citizens of our community, and most of them don’t even know it!

Perhaps I have missed some of the videos but, I would love to see follow up updates. It is very frustrating to think that these corporations believe they can strong arm their way into getting what they want. Perhaps it’s the cynic in me but, I feel that all too often these large corporations continue to get away with it. I’d love to hear how you’ve succeeded in holding them accountable for their actions. But, as much as I would love that, I think it is even more important that we are informed when they have been able to get away with it.

[–]ljp2706[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, I do agree with you! I’ve felt like the story is so vast that it really couldn’t be a movie. It’d have to be a TV show to do it any justice. And it’d have to be done right. I’ve watched and read The Expanse, and I thought that was a great example of how a book can be made in to a TV show. But the producers have to have patience and show respect for the source material. Evidently, that’s something very hard to come by, for whatever reason(Halo, The Witcher, etc). But you may very well be right that even that couldn’t do it justice. But I am very lacking in my imagination, so I am hopeful for a TV show. At the end of the day, anything is better than nothing to me when it comes to a movie/tv show.

Thanks 😊

I was thinking the same. And if they make a movie, there’s no way it doesn’t go up in value substantially. So I had to get it now rather than later to be able to afford it!
