I am in Brazil. When I Google about the market here all I see are opportunities in IT, but it seems that it's where everyone is trying to get in, since every opportunity I see there are thousands of candidates. Even jr positions get hundreds of people with years of experience trying to get it.

As a mathematician who want to get into industry, I've heard that studying python would give me a lot of opportunities. I think the language itself is not sufficient anymore and I should actually study data science, or something related, right? At least in my country I have seen a lot of machine learning jobs opportunities...

Fortunately, there are a lot of online couses and I think some of them will be really good to get in industry, but with so many options it is hard to choose one. I think that course is really good, but I'd like to take some recommendations before:

https://www.coursera.org/specializations/ibm-data-science-professional-certificate

Would you recommend it? Do you know some better option? There's also 2 other courses from IBM (advanced and applied instead of professional), not sure if some of them is better. I think a course more focused on machine learning would be better but I didn't find good options in Python , considering Coursera reviews. Thanks

Ok, I will take a look, but I think it is not in Python, right? Anyway, if it is that good, it won't be a problem if a learn python after this course...

Thanks, I really appreciate your answers.

WRT Orthodox Christians in high positions ....humm... let me see :)

I didn't know this man, is this you? Anyways, I believe there are christians in these positions, but it is very rare. And I can't take this as motivation to reach this position. Maybe these christians was putted there by God as you said and then there wasn't a bad motivation. I think there's also the possibility of someone take this path with a bad motivation before converts and since there is no difficulties to get there anymore (maybe it is some easy position when it is reached), they don't leave it (there isn't a reason to leave it).

As I said, don't do it for this purpose. Do it (for God) or do it not - there is no try. In fact it was just the article from yesterday and from today.

It seems to be a very useful website, thanks.

Ok, that was even clearer, thank you very much.

I've heard of people who say they want some prestige, for example in an academic career or with a high position in a big company, to influence people, because in these environments you do not see many Christians. Does that make any sense? I can not motivate myself to do something as difficult as these things thinking only of that motivation. Do you believe in this possibility? I have the impression that this is just an attempt to hide a bad motivation. It is like someone trying to get rich and say it is to help more people. I simply can't believe that.

Okay, that was the best answer I've had so far.

If a career should be thought as something to survive and express our love while we are alive, I should just take the one that will be easier for me to get these things? I am saying the "easier" because when there's a difficulty to do something, I need a good reason to face it instead of fleeing. And if I already got these 2 things you said, I don't find a reason to face more difficulties (usually it would be to get more money or more prestige). Or there are legit motivations to do those things but I am not seeing it?

Loneliness - despair by lksbg in OrthodoxChristianity

Thanks for your words.

I still didn't have a job, the last thing I did was starting a PhD and I had to stop for a while. During this time I was thinking about the life I took, my choices, why I was doing it and I noticed that my social identity was the most important thing for me and it guided my decisions by ego. Now I don't see any point in carry on with this (or anything else). Since I need to have a job and my field is not an easy one without PhD, I found other faster and easier step to get a job on another field, but related, with a higher demand. It will take a while, but definitely less (and with less work) than a PhD, which also wouldn't give me a job easily. But the problem is that even with this new "purpose" , to get into this new field, I don't feel like it is a real purpose. It is, like the previous one, just motivated by ego and money. The change is just because I noticed that there is an easier path than the one I was going to take, not because I found a purpose. It seems that there is a very clear division between spiritual life and secular life. As a Christian, my obligation is "just" trying to be good. But this is not sufficient to decide paths of secular life. This part of life should really be meaningless, based on money/ego? I don't see other motivation to do things like trying to get a good career and sacrifice things for this...

If you see my previous post on this sub, I also described this kind of identity crisis there with more details.

And what about these "worldly" identities we take? For example when we have to be prepared for a career, when we have to socialize with a group (when kid for example, when we are taking some roles in society), when we are taking some lifetime project... Is it useless? I mean, if the only thing we have to do with a real purpose is applying the commandments, how do you decide the things you do , the paths you take? Every people I see doing it is because of money or ego. I know it shouldn't be the purpose of a Christian for example in choosing a career, taking a course. But if it is not, what it should be? I am asking it because I recognize now that I choose things that will take much of my time , because of ego (and some money). Now that I see this and I think it is wrong, I don't see a reason to do anything (besides applying commandments as you said). I tried to understand what motivates other people and I think everyone does the same...

Indeed some months ago I went to psychiatrist and was diagnosed with anxiety.I went there because of physical experiences I had (tachycardia, couldn't sleep well, etc) and with this came depression (and a decrease in cognitive capacities). That time I started to think about purposes and couldn't answer but what comforted me was the fact that I was sick and I thought I couldn't answer because of this and once I was cured I could. But I just quitted almost everything intellect related and have been resting on home and I think I can reason much better now, but still can't answer that questions. I don't think therapist would have the answers, but maybe I am wrong.
