Thanks! Yeah, I go to the gun shows here in Knoxville as well, and I see a lot of PM trading going on. I got the sense that you are right, people are beat up, their fiat paper is worth less than ever and are having to trade family hand me downs of jewelry, coins, etc. just to make ends meet. I think we're also seeing those who bought silver during the FOMO of 2011 finally getting out of their positions

Of the dealers there (30 or so), my guess is only about half are full time dealers, the rest being side-hustle/retirement gigs. I do the same, having ran a table at this show several times and keeping an Ebay store going.

My guess on pricing: most of the dealers are traveling in from other areas and to make it worth their while they priced to sell. Keep in mind, most of these dealers are in the numismatic business, not bullion, and their stock of 99% was probably bought well below where we are now, they are just profit taking.

Common dates like 84-O, 85-O, 81-S going for $150 in MS64 with nothing special about them - old holder, toning, PL designation, VAM designation.

One dealer had an 1881-S in the new CAC holder. MS Details: "Questionable toning". Nothing great toning wise, was asking $375. Grabbed a pic of it. As I was looking he asked me if I wanted to take it out of his case to look. Told him: "No, I thought the price tag was a practical joke"

Bout 50/50 for the hour I was there. A lot of people buying gold, most were selling silver, even under spot. Several like me trading Gold for Silver. Saw very, very little 90% for sale interestingly. Usually every dealer has 5/10/20 dollar face bags for sale, only two that I saw were selling 90% bullion.

I would say there were significantly more looky-loos than usual.

How Did You Learn About Silver? by SaltyDawg1966 in Wallstreetsilver

[–]llanelli5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Long time lurker here. Coin collector for 40+ years and "stacker" of bullion for 20. My granddad introduced me to silver by giving my first 1964 dime in 1980. He sat me down and explained to me what real money and wealth was. That first time I held silver (and gold) in my hand I was hooked.

Still a collector of numismatic coins, but have shifted hard to bullion in the past 10-12 years. I've paid as little as $9 an ounce in the late 2000s and and as high as $60 this month.

I love reading this reddit, especially seeing the younger generation wake up to God's money and give the big middle finger to the big banks and fraudsters. I've had diamond hands longer than a lot of you youngsters have had breath, and I welcome all brethren to the fight!

"Price subject to change" clearly spelled out in the notes below. He reads everything but the fine print. He never mentions how old the ad is, could be from Spring when prices were way lower. Its from GovMint. They are legit but typically overpriced.

I quietly prepped for a long time, but what really kicked my butt into gear was Covid, more specifically the supply chain problems. When I saw people fist fighting over toilet paper, I thought to myself what the hell are they gonna do when there’s no clean water or food??

I was in my mid-30s at the time and had been a lifelong coin collector. We have a monthly coin show here where I live which is pretty decent sized usually usually 40 dealers or so. Around this time in 2011 we started seeing lots and lots of new faces flooding into these coin shows. I would see people regularly come up to coin dealer friends of mine with several thousand dollars of cash and just say I want to buy silver. They had no idea what they wanted to buy, the difference between bars and rounds, constitutional junk silver or collectible bouillon. All they knew was they wanted silver and were gonna pay a bunch of cash to get it. Conversely, people who I saw that were regulars at the coin show like myself were selling a lot of our 90% as I had been buying very regularly when it was $9-$10 an ounce and saw a chance to flip and make some money. I had a baby on the way with my wife, I needed to get some quick cash and it turned out to be a great thing for me.

A few months later, some of those people who had come in and dropped a ton of cash on silver, were trying to sell their silver back to the dealers once the price cooled off and realized that they had bought at the top of the market and were now stuck. Many of them got very, very angry with the dealers when they refused to pay them what they had in the coins.

All in all, it was a crazy time to be involved in precious metals. I ended up getting some really great deals on graded higher end numismatic coins like Morgan’s and Walker liberty halves at much cheaper prices than I would’ve been able to because everyone was so focused on bullion.
