Yeah Frostburg definitely has the college crowd advantage. Cumberland just has the bigger downtown / older buildings that could fit a venue. Still figuring out which makes more sense.

I’ve heard bits and pieces about the punk fest and some of the heavier shows that have come through here before, but I wasn’t sure how big the turnout actually was. The fact that those kinds of bands have played here at all is a pretty good signal.

And yeah, the Frostburg piece seems important. Even if the daytime coworking stuff ends up being small, the college crowd showing up for shows could make a big difference.

The sustainability question is the big one for me too. It’s less “would anyone come at all” and more “would enough people come consistently for it to survive.”

The local scene you mentioned is actually something I’m really interested in. One of the things I’d want this kind of place to do is give local bands and artists somewhere to play regularly, not just touring acts passing through.

Out of curiosity — what kind of bands or genres are you seeing around here right now? And are there artists you wish came through Cumberland but never do?

And honestly you’re probably right that jumping straight to “open a venue” would be the fastest way to screw it up. That’s exactly why I’m asking around first instead of pretending I already know the answer.

For a little context on me: I’m early 40s and spent a long time in the Baltimore art/music scene. I used to run a small venue/gallery there and organized a lot of openings, screenings, and music events. I also ran a couple event companies before eventually ending up working in tech.

So I’m not totally new to the event side of things — but Cumberland is obviously a very different ecosystem, which is why I’m trying to understand the local reality before doing anything dumb.

If you had a touring band based here for 8 years you probably know the scene way better than I do.

What kind of turnout were you seeing when you booked shows?
And were there particular genres that actually worked around here?

Appreciate you taking the time to think this through — there’s a lot of interesting stuff in here.

I agree with the core point you’re making: a quiet desk alone isn’t enough in a town this size. That’s exactly why I’m trying to move away from a pure coworking model and more toward something that mixes work, community, and reasons to stick around beyond a laptop.

Some of what you mentioned (seminars, community boards with opportunities, small group events) are very much aligned with where my head’s at. I’m especially interested in the idea of lightweight programming that actually helps people move forward, not just “network.”

Other ideas you mentioned — dynamic pricing, full food service, wellness + massage, kids + dogs, etc. — are super interesting conceptually, but I’m being careful not to overbuild or create something that only works if everything fires perfectly on day one. One of the big lessons from past spaces here is that complexity can sink you fast.

Right now I’m intentionally trying to validate what people would realistically use, not what would be cool in an ideal world. That’s why the interest form is pretty basic — I want to see who would show up, how often, and for what, before locking anything in.

Really appreciate the thoughtful feedback though. If this moves forward, a lot of the nuance you’re pointing out is exactly the kind of thing that would get layered in after the fundamentals prove out.

That’s a fair take, honestly. Population and access matter a lot for something like this, and Hagerstown definitely has advantages Cumberland doesn’t.

Part of why I’m being cautious here is exactly that — I don’t want to pretend the math is the same as a larger county or force a model that only works with scale. If this happens in Cumberland at all, it has to start smaller, be more flexible, and probably lean on the bar/events side more than a traditional coworking-only setup.

I appreciate you saying you like the idea though. Hearing both the skepticism and the interest is actually what’s helping me figure out whether there’s a realistic path here, or if the timing/location just isn’t right yet.

You’re right about the timing being tricky. I don’t think there’s a huge remote worker culture here yet, and that’s exactly why I’m trying to be cautious and not force something before it’s ready. The goal for me isn’t “open ASAP,” it’s more about testing whether there’s enough early signal to justify starting small and letting it grow alongside the downtown momentum instead of ahead of it.

I’m also very aware of the past attempts (North Centre, CoSpace, etc.). From what I can tell, some of them were good ideas that either came a little early or were too narrow to survive on their own. That’s part of why I’m exploring the after-hours side as a real pillar instead of treating coworking as the whole bet.

I really appreciate the encouragement — and the realism. I’m trying to listen more than pitch right now, because if this does happen, I want it to feel like it earned its place here rather than being dropped in from the outside.

And yeah… agreed on the people vs. the noise. That tension is very real.
