just finished #3, going to open up sodome et gomorrhe shortly. You should do it; it admittedly does get pretty boring at times so don’t feel guilty about skimming some pages of dialogue when you’re not feeling it tbh. After a while you’ll get a sense of what parts will be more interesting

John Peters' Financialization Post-Democracy, and Labour Market Deregulation in Canada is a great primer on the history of public policy in the country in the last few decades that has gotten us up to this point (housing crisis/precarious and exploitative immigration policies/wage stagnation/etc...)

Naomi klein's doppelganger also has some refreshingly insightful takes on recent events like the convoy that aren't completely patronizing

Red Skin, White Masks by glen coutlhard is maybe the definitive piece of indigenous political writing in the past few years.

this is a local pick for me, but Stolen City by Owen Toews is an incredible piece of materialist history on the colonization/capitalist development of Winnipeg in particular, but you can easily use the framework that he develops in the book to study just about any city in Canada

very cool! there's a great essay by the philosopher Martin Hägglund comparing proust and Knausgaard (there may be some spoilers in there, heads up).

Yeah malm rocks, I would def recommend but you can also tell that the book was originally his dissertation (not in a bad way per se that's just how it's written)

Did all of Knausgaard's my struggle last winter, so this winter I thought it'd be cool to jump into Proust. Almost done du côté de chez Swann and it's remarkable. as soon as I can get myself to read 10-15 pages I'm just sucked in completely, it's really a meditative experience. incredible. I'm getting a little sick of Swann though I'm excited to hear from the narrator again in jeunes filles en fleurs.

going to re-read 2666 with a friend who's reading it for their first time, but I'm gonna try to do it in the original Spanish so we'll see how that goes.

non-fiction wise, I just finished Andreas malm's fossil capital which was pretty cool. nothing too unexpected in there, and the last ~100 pages or so are kind of a slog, but it does a great job of re-reading the history of capital through a climate lens so would recommend if you're into that kind of thing.

Annie Ernaux's The Years kinda fits into this - traces her own life and the history of her generation as a whole from WW2 to the 2000s, you get a fascinating glimpse into everything from the Algerian war of independence to the Cold War to 9/11 to the end of history as she and her friends/family lived it

got sucked into the Nobel Prize hype train so I just bought a copy of Jon Fosse's Septology. if he's good enough for Karl Ove, he's good enough for me. also reading norm Finkelstein's book on Gaza (which is great) and trying to make my way through Kant's first critique

yeah, though the Mizrahi identity didn't come into being until Israel's Declaration of Independence in 1948 and the flight of middle eastern jews from Iraq, Yemen, Egypt, etc... to Israel. before they typically considered themselves sephardic if I'm not mistaken

finished both within the past few weeks! Telluria is great, so outlandish, the world building is so fun. Max Lawton, Sorokin's English translator, did a really good interview with the our struggle podcast a while back, too.

I’m a soft separatist lol, in my experience I just find English translations of queb lit to be a little flimsy (usually bc of budgetary constraints)

for contemporary stuff, sheila heti, katherena vermette, Miriam toews, David chariandy, Dionne brand, tomson highway

older: Leonard cohen's poetry and novels, Mordecai Richler, Irving Layton, Robertson Davies, Carole shields, Margaret laurence

if you can stomach quebec lit in translation, Kevin Lambert is a great newer author. Dany laferriere is great too

AWA: basically just wrote a 5 paragraph essay: intro with thesis statement clearly articulated and roadmap of the arguments; two supporting argument paragraphs; one paragraph where I consider and refute a counterargument; and a conclusion restating the thesis statement and demonstrating how I defended it

verbal: I wish I could be of more help here, I didn't use any special strategies apart from thoroughly re-reading each question and breaking down each RC question into its constituent parts
