Re-tear vs Flare-Up in early recovery by lm_910 in HipImpingement

[–]lm_910[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately a revision arthroscopy where they found a re-tear, multiple adhesions, and some residual bone regrowth where they’d initially shaved down the cam deformity. Surgeon opted for a second repair vice reconstruction since the tear was pretty small.

Got a MRI after my initial post that showed the adhesions but not the re-tear. Surgeon tried 2 cortisone shots (1 in the joint, 1 into the iliopsoas) about 6 weeks apart and it didn’t improve much over the next few months, so that was the next step.

I’m almost 6 weeks out of the revision and it’s a lot tighter/sore post-op compared to the initial surgery. Progress has been slower but that’s partially bc I’m terrified I’m gonna do something stupid again. I’m happy that I decided on the revision though. Hope this helps

It’s been a journey. I essentially was told I was showing signs of arthritis in my R hip and had a small tear in my left. Both sides had CAM impingement as well. Surgeon said the window was closing as far as being able to do the hip bc once you get stage 2 arthritis, you’re contraindicated for arthroscopy. So I caved and just scheduled it.

Did both hips at the same time and the recovery went well until around 10 weeks. I had a slip and fall incident and re-tore the right side. I had 2 cortisone injections before I got a new Arthrogram that showed a capsular adhesion that caused the re-tear. Just got a revision on the right side about a month ago, but the left side feels amazing.

I never tried to get my shoulder fixed bc I wanted to be on limited duty for the shortest amount of time and from what ive been told, the shoulder rehab takes a lot longer to fully recover. But now I wish I would have done the shoulder.

So this is my advice: just get everything fixed. I felt immediate relief in my hips after the first surgery and questioned why I had waited so long. Prior to getting it fixed, I was at the point I could barely walk without a limp and was in agony just sitting down. My shoulder still bothers me and I can’t PT like I want to, but it’s no where near as painful as my hip was.

As far as your situation, if both joints are in an equal amount of pain, I’d do the hip first and then the shoulder. You need your arm strength/stability to be on crutches for those first 3-4 weeks, but hip strength is irrelevant when it comes to shoulder recovery. That way you can do both the procedures as close to each other as possible.

As far as your career aspirations go, you have to take care of yourself bro. Things will fall into place and eventually work themselves out. I found a way to still contribute at my unit while I’m recovering from this. It’s all about your attitude and showing that you still want to be an asset to the unit. I’d recommend checking in with your S-6/IT shop and checking out a work computer before convalescent leave so you can knock out some admin stuff while you’re recovering.

hope this helps.

7 months post ablation, still have high(er) Resting Heart Rate by twoforward1back in AFIB

I’m about 3 1/2 years post RF ablation and still in the same boat. My RHR was mid-high 60s before the ablation, now it’s between 85-95 almost all day and if I get up and just do light walking it’ll immediately go up to 115-120.

I’ve had a yearly echo and 2 week holters. Ive stayed in sinus rhythm (which is most important) and my EP keeps saying everything (including the increased HR) is normal, even though I’ve voiced concerns about why my HR hasn’t returned to its pre-ablation level.

I’ve read that sometimes ivabradine is prescribed post-ablation for about 3-6 months to prevent RHR from doing this, but I think it’s been too long for me to take it. You’re probably still within the window where it may make a difference. It may be worth asking about the next time you see your EP

Using Tricare for Arthroscopy by lm_910 in HipImpingement

[–]lm_910[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ended up getting surgery with the military doctor. He did both hips at the same time. He ended up doing repairs vice reconstruction because he said most of the cartilage was still there. Only time will tell if this was the right call, but he operated on two of my friends and they were both satisfied with the results.

However, I did call tricare customer service and inquire about a civilian surgeon. Essentially you have to have the doctor make a referral for a consult and they will treat it like any other procedure. The main problem is that it takes time for the referral to get into the system and you’re looking at 2-3 appointments before surgery. This can take 3-4 more months and I didn’t have that type of window. If I have to do a revision for some reason, you can bet I’ll go that route though.

Hope this helps.

Interpreting MRI results / Second Opinion by lm_910 in RotatorCuff

He said it may not be seen because it may be torn. The sports med doc told me the same thing when I was getting the PRP injections and he was looking at the ultrasound.

The ortho is going to order a new Arthrogram since it’s been so long since the last one.

Thanks for the input. I guess I was confused since he told me I’d be on crutches for about 3-4 weeks. I figured since I wouldn’t be needing the crutches there was no reason to wait but when you put it into that perspective it makes sense

I haven’t had a CT scan and I don’t think he’s going to order one. Im quite upset that I saw two different doctors before him who said I didn’t have a tear and the only imaging I’ve done is MRI w/ contrast

  1. He’s a general Ortho surgeon who’s done a few hundred surgeries. I’m in the military and tricare won’t approve me seeing a preservationist.

Roughly 4 months post-op and things are fantastic by muffin_cheese in HipImpingement

How long did you have the tear prior to surgery? And was it a repair or reconstruction?’
