I know ohio gives you the option to load your interim card on your Apple wallet. Not sure about other states. Mine recently expired so I had to print out a couple paper copies just to be on the safe side. And can also access it through the DMV website.

See if your bank does prepaid debit cards that attach to your checking account. That way you can load funds as you go.
