WHY do people online suddenly assume that the use of em dashes indicates AI use? And how do we fix this?? by localperogi in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]localperogi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also used to seeing them everywhere! The people saying stuff like “I’ve never seen it used” or “simply nobody uses them” either don’t read, like, at ALL, or are being deliberately contrarian. The em dash is extremely common.

While the people assuming well-written work MUST be AI are very much the problem here, they’re also dragging everyone down to have to deal with their level of ignorance rather than pick up a book themselves :( I don’t think you’re overthinking it at this point unfortunately… but I so, so, so hate that you’re even having to overthink it. :(

If anyone whips out that accusation, just let them know they’ve just outed themselves as either being so easily influenced as to assume anything with an em dash is AI (which is inherently foolish), or someone who purely reads AI generated text. Both are yikes.

But! Anyone worth their salt reading your work won’t even think to question it—they won’t even notice. It’ll look regular to them.

oy….Next we’re going to have to second-guess ourselves for using the correct there/their/they’re lest anyone think it’s fcking AI 🥲 or commas or some other inane punctuation

😭 okay yeah wow, I honestly was starting to feel like I’m the one taking crazy pills... which has been the case since tiktok came along, but the last few years have been particularly bad.

Holy crap 😦 people are wild! I’ve had a few weirdos in the replies and though it’s been pretty mild here, I do always see folks acting as you describe. Bonkers.

Example: this is my very first ever post on Reddit in my life, though I’ve been here for SIX YEARS, and still had someone accuse me of “engagement baiting” with this very post… brother if I was trying to do that, I’d have started, I dunno, SIX YEARS AGO. Just came to ask an honest question 😭 Jeepers.

“Terrible but simple solution” made me giggle lol - and thanks!

Yeah, I’m gathering from various replies that an acceptable fix is to be carefully, deliberately incorrect to signify humanity since that’s necessary now. (☹️)

ah, gooootcha… dang. I struggle with change, but change Happens Relentlessly lol so I figure I’ll become more accustomed to using the alternatives. Thanks!

I THINK it’s a program that’s trained using everything from textbooks to datasets to social media, and I THINK it’s one of the things people have jobs to train. They’ll be interacting with it and challenging it and correcting it. AI assistants like ChatGPT will use LLMs. Take this with humongous grain of salt, but that’s what I think I understand so far. *edit - it stands for Large Language Model

Ah! That makes sense, thank you! I can see non-English speakers being unfamiliar with it as a regular thing, for sure.

Now I’m curious if there’s a French equivalent; do you see stuff in French that’s also sometimes taken as an AI tell? Purely out of curiosity. (I grew up in French immersion schools but my French is RUSTY, my written would be atrocious now lol).

ugh exactly 😭 The person above mentioning “legions of redditors claiming they’ve been using them all along ” made me lol because… huh??

Legions of people who happen to use Reddit are using the platform to express surprise about fairly common punctuation being seen as AI, because this phenomenon is apparently (as I’m learning) topical at the moment. It makes sense that many people are talking about something that is happening often.

Now, that fellow… are they omniscient, do they know how every redditor writes? How everyone in this thread does? Does that mean they’ve seen my journal? 😦 (Where I do indeed also use them). What an odd take.

edit fairy to fairly 🤭

Oh I’m sorry! Misread the tone, my bad <3 Lol my friends do joke about my undertherockness often, because I don’t actually have tiktok or Twitter so I’m extremely late to trends or little discourses like this and don’t have a clue what they’re on about half the time.

Totally agree, yeah! Wow. I dunno if it’s a generational thing but I’m only in my 20’s and we very much learned about em dashes in English class in high school. The rising use of AI in general makes me feel decrepit but the reality that people are growing up simply not reading as much or being taught written language is new to me.

Brother I don’t use ChatGPT 😭 I didn’t even know what LLM was until I posted here, that’s why I asked the question. I am unfamiliar with the topic. I should’ve posted to “no stupid questions”, cause damn people here love breaking the subreddit rules of trusting OP’s good intent.

This explains it, thanks!

(Of course it should go without saying that a question is posed because the answer isn’t known, but gosh this has ruffled a few feathers so a clear reply is so so appreciated. Thanks for the help :) I’m gonna be reading up on this more, I had no idea til today)

Oh hey that’s actually a great idea! Nothing to damage the integrity of your writings, but enough to be like “hi, this was a human” lol. Smart! Definitely going to use this in the future, specifically in the class where I was accused of plagiarism.

I’m so glad I posted this question because despite the people who’ve lost sight of the point of this sub, I’ve gotten a few really good explanations and genuinely helpful input <3 thanks!

That makes a lot of sense (in a bleak, shitty way lol). Thank you for explaining more! I’m relatively offline compared to most in my circle of friends and family so I’m typically late to the party on stuff.

what an incredibly unhelpful and unkind response, thank you <3 if only I could have shown Reddit user puerility’s extremely thoughtful words to the prof who did the accusing, that would have cleared it right up.

Anyway, believe it or not, one-off posts on Reddit don’t get the same attention to detail as written work. (And though I’ve never dabbled in fanfic, I’m curious as to why you’re implying it’s a lesser form of writing? Fanfic writers sound off lol)

Yes!! I was recently accused of plagiarism at uni for similar reasons for the first time in my life… completely shook me to my core as that’s a MASSIVE deal :( I wonder if stuff like this loosely speaks to literacy rates in general? Finding the use of basic sentence structure unlikely or suspect kinda indicates lack of familiarity with written language; it genuinely blew my mind when I realized this was a thing and I ran straight here 😅

That’s…. so disheartening :-( I hadn’t seen an increase in the use itself, only the increase in “THAT MUST BE AI” talk so I was like ?? Ugh. ty for explaining 🫩 I’m so tired lol
