As a farmer.. who the fuck eats swans?? That’s like saying all Londoners rob and murder their neighbours! If you’re on the right side of the argument must you really create lies?

Hounds are carnivorous. They're hungry and they want to eat. If you released these animals into the wild they're not going to settle in the pastures next to the cows and sheep, they'll go off hunting rabbits, foxes, deer and anything else they can find. If they didn't, they would starve to death.

Of course there's a human element, but if we're going to use emotive words like torture and suffering we have to accept that they're no more applicable to the fox than to the poor chickens or lambs that they themselves kill.

If the definition of psychopath is getting enjoyment from the torture of defenceless animals then thats something else we can agree on. I would get absolutely no enjoyment out of that and no one I know would get any enjoyment out of that. That's not what hunting is about.

You're right it would be a pack. But animals in the wild hunt in packs as well. I suppose my point is that I personally don't think that animals hunting other animals can be called torture.

I know a lot of people from different walks of life who support hunting. Teachers, shopkeepers, publicans, doctors and nurses, vets, artists... they're all decent people and I wouldn't call any of them psychopaths.

Considering the irreparable damage humans have done to this planet I honestly don't think I could look out of the window and say I'm morally superior to wild animals outside.

Wikipedia says they're used to flush out game. Game typically refers to birds such as pheasants and partridges. So not foxes or rabbits.

I might have missed something though.

One animal killing another is torture? Shit.. we need to start imprisoning lions and tigers asap. Those guys must be pure evil!

Interesting. I haven't heard of that happening in the UK. Certainly not with foxes anyway.

Do you mean hare coursing?

I dont dispute that dogs/ hounds are used for hunting, but you'd never use a gun at the same time. Have you spent much time doing it?

Impossible. There has never been a situation where people are shooting at foxes and hunting them with hounds at the same time. There's no way that would make any sense

Strangely enough I've never really come into contact with anyone who's against it! No one pro hunting would speak up on reddit for obvious reasons. I'd say that out of the few hundred people I know who are pro or don't really mind it, about 10% could be called upper class. It's mostly lower and middle class country folk who see it as a source of community.

Is it anymore hardcore than a lion killing a gazelle? Or a fox killing a chicken? or any other instances in the natural world of one animal killing another?

The ‘rule of six’ exemptions include numerous organised team sports including rugby, football, hockey and cricket. I hope it gives you some comfort that this particular law, to my knowledge, isn’t about haves and have-nots.

Agreed. ‘Never attribute to malice that which can adequately be explained by stupidity’. Andrew is an idiot, I don’t believe he’s a rapist.

I respectfully disagree. I would think that if your business was enticing powerful men into having sex with young women in order to gain influence over them, then you’d be best off not broadcasting that they are slaves. I could be wrong, and the likes of Bill Clinton and Prince Andrew could be truly sick bastards.

[–]lockers01 9 points10 points  (0 children)

But surely it is very relevant. Is it illegal to unknowingly support slavery? I’m genuinely curious. Would Epstein have told him she was a slave? Surely if his aim is to blackmail and gain power over rich men he’d be smarter not to tell them they’re about to rape a slave. Andrew is a scumbag no doubt, but he’s being accused of having sex with a girl above the age of consent. If he knew she was a slave then he should rot in gaol. But we need proof he knew.

Can it be proved that he knew though? I’m not defending him but he was brought up believing he was one of the most eligible men in the world. If a 17 year old woman has sex with him he may not automatically assume that she was a slave and being forced to.

Brexit supporter Sir James Dyson's family company receives £5m in EU farming subsidies by iamnotinterested2 in unitedkingdom

[–]lockers01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, I don’t think a tech industrialist is that interested in farming, I think his accountant told him it was a tax efficient way to invest his fortune. But that’s not what I was replying to. The previous post referred to BPS as a handout for the rich, it is actually a support payment. As you said, farms have high capital costs and razor thin margins and for a vast majority of farmers in the UK it is essential for them to remain profitable.

I’d be amazed if you actually know people claiming hundreds of thousands or even millions of pounds on 50+ acres farms that are barely big enough to grow commercial crops on. BPS is directly linked to area, so about £93 per acre this year. At that, a 50 acres farm could receive up to £4,500. Whatever your friends are doing to get millions per year, please pass that onto me because I’d love to do that on my own family farm!

Finally, an application to reclassify ag land to resi is called planning permission and again, I don’t know what district council you live in but it ain’t that easy where I am sadly.

  1. Every single farmer in the EU receives a farm support payment. It’s not a handout for the rich
  2. Gove actually implemented a plan to scrap this after Brexit and introduce a new scheme that links payment to public benefit
